🔬 Why do we check an ear cytology when your pet has itchy ears?

When a pet comes in shaking their head, scratching at their ears, or dealing with recurring ear infections, one of the most valuable diagnostic tools we have is an ear cytology.

Using a small sample from the ear, we examine it under the microscope to see what’s actually causing the problem. It helps us identify things like:
🐾 Yeast
🦠 Bacteria
🕷️ Ear mites (when present)
🔥 Inflammatory cells

Why does this matter? Because not all ear infections are the same.

Treating a yeast infection with medication meant for bacteria (or vice versa) may not solve the problem—and can sometimes make it worse or contribute to antibiotic resistance. By looking under the microscope, we can choose the treatment that’s most likely to work the first time.

A quick test today can mean:
✅ More accurate treatment
✅ Faster relief for your pet
✅ Fewer repeat visits
✅ Healthier ears in the long run

Did you know we have an isolated cat ward for our feline patients? 🐱

As part of our Fear Free approach, we want cats to feel as safe and comfortable as possible during their stay with us. Housing cats in a quieter, separate space helps minimize stress and gives them a better environment for hospitalization and recovery. We also incorporate calming music and calming pheromones to help our feline patients relax even more while they’re in our care.
