What an amazing thing to witness!!
I didn’t get to watch Secretariat or Seabiscuit race, but I’ve heard about it my whole life.
What Golden Tempo, Jose Ortiz and Cherie DeVaux were able to accomplish feels just as super historic!
It was so cool to see-
Two brothers who dreamed of being jockeys and then finished 1st and 2nd (holding hands in the photo)..:
And then to also see the first female trainer win the Kentucky Derby-
You couldn’t have scripted a better race.
It was emotional and inspiring.
There’s a million things cool about this, but it’s awesome to see a competitor who never thinks they are out of the game.
To see Jose & Golden Tempo run dead last for 3/4 of the track, and see that competitive spirit to still believe they could win, is awesome!!

The Mustang Runners of Nevada, 1910
Before the Taylor Grazing Act, Nevada’s ranges were open. Wild mustangs were pests to ranchers but salvation to the Shoshone and Paiute. The “Mustang Runners” were Native teenagers who could run down a wild horse on foot.

Winnemucca Jack, a 17-year-old Paiute, was the best. He’d run for 20 miles, never breaking eye contact, until the horse was too tired to fight. No rope, no gun. He’d talk it calm, breathe into its nose, and walk it home. He’d trade one broke mustang for 3 months of flour for his family.

In 1910, the Army hired him to catch mounts for the Cavalry. He caught 40 horses in one summer. An officer offered him $5 per head. Jack said “No. $5, and you teach my little brother to read.” The officer agreed.

When the government started shooting mustangs from planes in the 1930s, Jack hid a band of 12 in the Toiyabe Range. Their descendants still run there. The BLM calls them “heritage horses.” The Paiute call them “Jack’s horses.”
