Let's talk hackles.
Otherwise known as piloerection.
Piloerection is a completely involuntary reaction your dog does when they are overexcited, overaroused, scared, fearful, or anxious.
It does not mean your dog is going to be aggressive or attack. Yes it can be an indicator that your dog feels like they need to protect themselves, but is not a guarantee.
Look at the whole picture of your dog not just the hair being raised.
Because body language can be tricky to read quickly and in the moment, I do tell people to give dogs space when they raise their hair. If your dog is raising their hair at another dog or person or whatever it may be gentle move them away until they can decompress a bit. If its another dog doing it to you, again slowly move away creating space.
If you know the dog well and believe that it is just out of pure excitement I do still encourage you to move with caution in mind because big feelings can quickly bubble over. I'm not saying don't play or engage with the dog just be aware of how their body language may change while you are interacting.
