✨A glimpse into what socialization looks like at our training center!

When our dogs aren’t in training mode, their socialization time is just as important! These breaks give them time to exercise, play fetch, sniff, chew on bones, drink water, take potty breaks, and interact with our trainers.

We also use this time to reinforce appropriate manners around other dogs and people. That means encouraging positive interactions while addressing unwanted behaviors such as rough play, face biting, ear tugging, excessive barking, resource guarding, and reactive growling.

For many of our dogs, these sessions are a crucial part of learning how to navigate their free time appropriately. They also provide the perfect opportunity to reinforce newly learned commands like “sit” and “come” in a more relaxed environment.

Training doesn’t stop when the structured lessons end! Consistency throughout the day helps build better habits, stronger communication, and more confident dogs. 🐶🐾

A huge thank you to Ann Wymore for organizing such an amazing event in support of Soul Dog Rescue ! 💛 We loved showcasing our trained dogs, connecting with the community, learning new yoga moves, meeting so many adorable pups, and contributing a raffle prize to support the rescue.

These pups are staying with us for our board-in training programs, where they receive 24/7 care, supervision, and training to build better manners, strengthen obedience, and develop healthy socialization skills. Read on to learn more about what they’re working on:

💛Sugar Bear: Puppy basics, jumping, potty training, biting, boundaries, digging, staying out of the cat litter box, and coming when called.
🧡Jager: Learning boundaries, respecting personal space, and managing his need for attention, especially when his family is giving love to other dogs.
💜Cosmo: Working on jumping, potty training, socialization, boundaries, and aggression-related behaviors.
❤️Primo & Cash: Building confidence, improving socialization and obedience, practicing boundaries, addressing aggression-related behaviors, and working on digging.
💗Lulu: Developing better obedience skills, improving socialization, and learning to navigate situations around other dogs without reacting.
💙Indi: Working on puppy basics, jumping, potty training, biting, boundaries, digging, staying out of the cat litter box, and coming when called.

We’re excited to watch each of these pups progress, and help their families build the skills they need for long-term success!

Let’s Talk Prong Collars! 🐕

What is a prong collar? Why do our trainers use them? How should it properly fit your dog?

A prong collar is a training tool designed to apply pressure around a dog’s neck when tension is placed on the leash without damaging the larynx. When properly fitted and used by an experienced trainer, it can to help improve leash communication, address pulling, and reinforce obedience commands.

Proper fit with safe, appropriate training techniques are essential when using a prong collar. Always consult a qualified trainer to ensure you understand how to fit and use the collar correctly before incorporating it into your dog’s training.

✨ Otto’s Transformation Story ✨

Otto came to us at just 12 weeks old needing help with basic obedience, leash skills, potty training, and better listening skills.

When we first started working on leash walking, Otto really struggled to understand the leash, collar, and the heel command. He was resistant to the new expectations and redirection. Our trainers focused on giving him extra time, patience, and repetition so he could really understand what we were asking of him.

But by day 7, Otto was loose-leash walking and beginning to understand the heel command! He gained more confidence on the agility course and was beginning to sit and stay for short time intervals. His recall “come” command grew stronger every day.🐾

Throughout his board-in training program, we focused on building his obedience skills through consistent communication, clear boundaries & expectations, and plenty of patience. By the end of his program, Otto had made incredible progress in both his training and confidence. We are so proud of how far this little guy came! 💙🐶

Let’s Talk Recall!🗣️

Recall is when you ask your dog to “Come,” and they return directly to you. It’s debatably one of the hardest commands to teach because your dog needs to build focus, motivation, patience, and self control while learning to consistently respond to the command.

“Come” is one of our core commands that we introduce and build on throughout our basic obedience training programs. More importantly, having a reliable recall can be a critical safety skill for both you and your dog.🐕
