🐾 What Kind of Legacy Are We Leaving? 🐾
The future of our breed doesn’t just depend on the dogs we produce.
It depends on the people we inspire.
Every respected breeder, successful exhibitor, and accomplished handler was once the new person standing ringside—nervous, inexperienced, and hoping someone would take the time to answer a question.
Someone taught us.
Someone encouraged us.
Someone helped us learn.
Now it’s our turn.
As preservation breeders and exhibitors, we have a responsibility not only to protect our breed, but to help cultivate the people who will carry it forward long after we are gone.
Will they find mentors?
Will they find encouragement?
Will they find people willing to share knowledge and support their growth?
Or will they decide this isn’t a community they want to be part of?
The future of our breed will be shaped by the experiences newcomers have today.
Before criticizing another breeder, kennel, or dog, ask yourself:
🔹 Have I actually met them?
🔹 Have I personally evaluated their dogs?
🔹 Have I put my hands on them?
🔹 Do I know the facts firsthand?
Too often opinions are formed through hearsay, gossip, and assumptions rather than personal experience.
Healthy discussion about structure, pedigrees, health testing, and breeding decisions has an important place in preservation breeding. Thoughtful conversations help us learn and improve.
Rumors, personal attacks, and tearing down fellow breeders do not.
Every conversation matters.
Every interaction matters.
Every opportunity to teach, encourage, and welcome someone matters.
Because one day, today’s newcomer may become tomorrow’s mentor, breeder, judge, club officer, or preservationist.
Your legacy isn’t just the dogs you produce—it’s the experience you create for the people who come after you.
