This weekend was a wonderful reminder of just how much knowledge, passion, and dedication exists within the Collie community. ❤️

There are breeders who have devoted decades to studying this breed—its history, structure, health, temperament, pedigrees, and the Standard—and who are willing to share that knowledge with the next generation.

Preservation breeding isn’t about changing the Collie. It’s about learning from those who came before us, using the tools and knowledge we have today, and making thoughtful decisions that protect and preserve this incredible breed for generations to come.

If you love Collies—whether you’re a breeder, exhibitor, owner, or simply someone who wants to learn more—I strongly encourage you to explore the Collie Club of America and the Collie Health Foundation. There is so much valuable education available to all of us.

The more we learn, the better we can do for the Collie. ❤️🐾

Here’s to continuing to learn, sharing knowledge, supporting one another, and moving our beloved breed forward while never losing sight of what makes a Collie a Collie.

The Collie hasn’t lost its history. It’s right here in front of us. ❤️

One comment I hear often is, “Why can’t Collies look like they used to?” or “Show breeders changed the Collie.”

So I love pulling out old Collie publications like this one.

This is Ch. Hillkeeper’s Heart Throb on the cover of Collie Cues in March 1979—nearly 50 years ago. Look closely at that head and expression.

The long, clean head. The wedge. The flat skull. The almond-shaped eye. The properly carried, tipped ears. The beautiful expression that is so uniquely Collie.

Does every Collie today look exactly like a Collie from 1979? Of course not. Breeds evolve, individual bloodlines differ, and breeders have different interpretations of the ideal. But the foundation of correct Collie type did not suddenly appear in modern show dogs.

That type was being deliberately bred for generations ago.

And if we go even farther back through old photographs, advertisements, pedigrees and breed publications, we continue to see the characteristics that helped define the Collie.

That’s one of the things I love most about being a preservation breeder. We aren’t trying to reinvent the Collie. We are entrusted with preserving the qualities that make a Collie a Collie while breeding for health, soundness, temperament and the future of the breed.

History matters.

And sometimes the best response to “Collies never looked like that before” is simply to open an old magazine. ❤️🐾
