Some years ago I made the decision to NOT sell puppies. We occasionally (like every other year-ish) breed a litter here, for the express purpose of raising dogs for professional law enforcement work. So I now keep my entire litters back until 6 months to a year of age, before pups are for sale. I do this for 2 reasons. 1, I want the absolute best candidates for work to be available to me as that is my primary purpose for the breeding in the first place, and 2, I want any pups that aren't quite enough dog for my purposes to have a solid foundation in crate training, neutral public obedience, livability, and any necessary vaccines or preventative medical completely up to date before they go to civilian placements.
I have seen an astronomical increase in the numbers of malinois and Dutch young dogs surrendered to rescue or shelters in recent years, and the primary reasons for needing to rehome the dogs are these issues. The dog can't sit still, won't recall, destroys everything, can't even rest in a crate without screaming or spinning nonstop, can't go out in public because reactive, or zero leash manners, etc. So to try and mitigate some of these issues, I have taken the time to raise and train my litters to be dogs that folks aren't held hostage by, and can truly enjoy out doing the things they like to do in public spaces and at home.
