We are THE premier humane shelter in the Riverbend, serving the area for over 70+ years as a non-profit shelter providing compassion and care to abused, unwanted and abandoned animals. We have been an important part of the community for over 60 years, serving the Riverbend like Alton, Godfrey, Bethalto, East Alton, Wood River, plus other adjoining communities. 5As is a not-for-profit, no-kill shelter located in the Alton/Godfrey area placing about 500 "forever friends" into "forever homes" every year. Don't forget to check out the areas largest thrift shop, "The 5As Thrift" in Wood River for the best in treasure hunting bargains!

Tinker has been with us quite some time now and she is ready to be the supergirl in someone’s life!
She’s just over a year old and still has that cute puppy energy. She is a ball of love and energy ready to share it with anyone who would be willing to give her a chance!
We pulled her from Animal Control and gave her the opportunity for an adoption but no one has fallen in love with her the way we have. Come out and see what a goofball this lovebug is and maybe she will be the hero in your life.

Buster and Walker will BOTH be at Tractor Supply Store today in Alton!

Buster (dark brown and white) is 7 yrs old, super sweet and friendly, and loves the water. He prefers a home without small children but is otherwise pretty compatible in most homes!

Walker (white and tan) is 8 yrs old but you wouldn’t know it! He loves to play and meet people. He came in because his house had recently burned down and he had nowhere to go. He is housebroken but during storms he gets scared and can have accidents. He likes dogs and cats both but NEEDS a fenced in yard. He is known for door bolting so would need someone to be able to watch him closely as they come and go (:

Mr. Jack has his taco on and he’s ready for Halloween!
In all seriousness, Jack is a silly guy looking for his perfect home to claim as the one and only fourlegged personality in your life. He doesn’t care for other dogs and he isn’t a fan of cats but he does seem to like every person he meets. He’s got springs in his legs and loves to bounce around - no baby gate or short fencing will hold him back! He’s a middle aged guy and does great for walks on his leash.
Come out and say hello to our jumping Jack and see if he’s the small dog you’ve been looking for!

We hate to ask once again, but we are in dire need of dog and cat food. Because of this economy our adoptions have slowed down somewhat, which translate in that the more animals we continue to care of, the more food they intake!
So we kindly ask for your help in keeping their tummy's full while they are here!

Sunday and Monday were very difficult days for the staff this week as one of the worst decisions ever to be made was made to let one of our senior boys go over the rainbow bridge.

Timber had been with us since 2017 and while rough around the edges he was a very loved dog by those who worked at the shelter. His favorite part of the year was winter when the snow was on the ground and he got to play in it and zoom around in the fresh snowfall. He loved to play a game of “in and out” with the staff to avoid staying in while cleaning services were being completed and had a very goofy but intense personality that could be difficult to understand if you didn’t know him.
Because he required being the only dog, had a preference to women, and required multiple visits to get to know he remained with us to love and cherish for 8.5 yrs. Way too long for any dog to be stuck at a shelter.
When he started showing symptoms of discomfort and lethargy on Sunday he was taken to emergency where he was diagnosed with the likelihood of cancer and without being in a home for proper monitoring and consistent care the recommendation was to let him be free to frolic in the snow over the rainbow bridge.
With heavy hearts we agreed.

No dog senior or otherwise should have to remain in a shelter for so much of their life to only to pass in the arms of their caretakers.
We try so hard to help our seniors and longer term dogs to find homes, but find it difficult when no one is interested in taking the extra time to get to know them.
While Timber may have been extra difficult due to his other requirements, all we ask for is patience and effort. Instead of the brand new 2 yr old we got in last week take a chance on the 6 yr old we’ve had for 4 yrs. Even if it means a second or third visit. They’ve been with us so long it’s hard for them to recognize new people as people to trust.

We loved Timber so much and we thank you for taking the time to read his story.

As hard as OUR employees AND volunteers work on a daily basis to take care of the dogs and cats in our care, THEY, amoungst all you out there who are crutial to our economic survival, we honor ALL of you for what you do day in and day out!

We are preparing one of our "Pop-Up Shoppes"! This one for Halloween!
Get a great jump on your Halloween shopping on everything from Halloween home decor, costume ideas and party decorations with another 5As "Pop-Up Shoppe"!
