Yesterday, we had the privilege of fitting this lovely and unique guy! He’s new to his current family and is the new partner for a youth rider. He had the best brain, but a very unique back.
Equine lordosis is a condition where the horse's spine dips downward, creating a pronounced "U" shape along the topline. While uncommon, it is generally benign and most affected horses can continue to live active, pain-free, and ridden lives with proper management…including proper saddle fit.
He’s only seven, so protecting his back so we can keep him going for many more years, while maintaining balance for the rider was the goal!! We utilized a Toklat T3 Matrix shim pad with a shim in the middle slot that we fashioned from a wool and neoprene shim we had on hand. We cut it to fit the weakness in his back and the pocket in this high quality pad. Generally, shimming to this extent isn’t advisable, but in this case it was so needed!
This pad paired with the Double J saddle the customers already owned offered remarkably consistent contact! Rider sat balanced and the horse seemed comfortable!
What’s the next step? Consistency! Quality rides with focus on building supportive muscle and frequent fit checks to ensure our solution is doing its job well!
We’d love to hear your thoughts on this fit or your experience with this type of back!
