Our volunteer in the spotlight for the month of October is our fantastic kennel volunteer Jelena Ivanis! Jelena started volunteering with us in December of 2025 and has a total of 39 volunteer hours.

When we asked about her volunteer experience, she said, "I can't say enough about Cape Ann. It is a little haven of safety and wonder and I'm so grateful I've come across it. I really cherish the time spent with the pups - they teach me so much about bravery, resiliency, and appreciating the little and big moments of life every shift I'm there. I am in awe of all the amazing people that gather there in their free time to shelter and love the animals during this challenging transition in their lives. This work matters and I'm grateful for the opportunity to be part of Cape Ann's mission."

💕 Meet Lilas, your potential dream cat! 😻

This 1-year-old tabby is sweet, friendly, easygoing, and oh-so-lovely! Her foster family calls her an absolute DREAM, and it’s easy to see why. She loves spending time with her people, lounging in sunny windows, and playing with her favorite toys. She’s affectionate without being clingy and perfectly content doing her own thing. Basically, the perfect balance! 💗

Lilas has been thriving in her foster home, and it’s a wonderful reminder of how beneficial fostering can be! 💕 A break from the shelter gives cats like Lilas a chance to decompress, settle into a home environment, and show off their amazing personalities. It’s especially meaningful for our Extended Stay Club kitties, who have been waiting a little longer for their forever homes!

Sweet mama Toast came in to the shelter pregnant and scared of the world around her. She gave birth to a large litter of 10 puppies, and as her caretakers, we worried that her stubborn and initially shy nature would affect her likelihood of a quick adoption. She was with us for 3.5 months before her puppies were born, raised, adopted, and she was spayed and ready for a home of her own.

As fate has it, Toast was adopted into a loving family with a brother, Blueberry, formerly known at the shelter as Toaster! 🍞 They are a match that was meant to be, and we couldn't be happier for this darling girl. 💕

Her new owners shared recently:
"We are so happy and grateful for everything you all do. Please tell everyone how much we appreciate the difference you make!
Blueberry is being such a fine big brother too!
We're big walkers, at least 2 long walks in the woods behind us in Lanesville, little ones in between and rollicking playtime in the fenced yard, and on the deck.
She's still timid of people, especially men and kids. We're keeping to quiet spots now.
She sits, stays, happily goes in and out through all doors and up and down stairs.
Eating all her food at once!
She's going to be a GREAT dog. She's already a very good girl."

This October, we’re proud to support for and show their commitment to pets in need. Across the country, millions of companion pets enter shelters each year. With Ira Subaru, we’re committed to helping these pets find loving homes.

Next Saturday, October 24th, we are partnering with Ira Subaru in Danvers to showcase some of our adoptable animals! Stop by between 11am-1pm to visit us in their service waiting area to meet pups* waiting for their forever families!

*please note, only select dogs will be onsite for this event

MILA HAS BEEN WAITING SINCE APRIL. YES, APRIL. 😭💔

Six months and one adoption that unfortunately didn't work out. And still, this quirky, zoomie-loving, attention-demanding little queen is waiting for someone to see just how special she is. 🥺🐾

Meet Mila, our Puerto Rico transplant with a BIG personality and absolutely zero interest in being just another cat. This girl will tell you when she wants attention, rub against your legs to make sure you know she exists, and keep you thoroughly entertained with her endless energy and silly antics. She loves treats, her scratching post, and running around like she has a very important appointment with absolutely nothing. 💨

But Mila knows what she wants in life, and she's not afraid to show it! 👑 She'd prefer to be your one and only feline, thank you very much. She's also a girl who can get overstimulated and a little nippy, so she needs someone who understands cat body language, respects her boundaries, and appreciates a cat with a little extra ✨spice✨. Give her that understanding, and you'll get a hilarious, affectionate, endlessly entertaining companion in return.

Liberty Bibberty? More like Liberty WHO-BBERTY. There's a new mascot in town. 💅

Our girl Liberty has her eyes on a new career opportunity, and let's just say she's ready to put the competition on notice. Sure, the current mascot has a catchy name. But does it have four legs? A winning smile? The ability to give approximately 847 kisses? We think NOT.

Liberty is officially campaigning to become the NEW Liberty Bibberty mascot, and frankly, we think she's a shoo-in. 🐾 Liberty Mutual Insurance

We are so grateful to Rena and the entire Harrington family for continuing to honor Justin’s memory in such a meaningful way with the Justin Harrington Memorial Fundraiser. Thank you for putting so much heart into organizing another wonderful event for Cape Ann Animal Aid!

Because of the generosity of Justin’s friends and family, and so many animal lovers who came out to show their support, over $6,000 was raised to help homeless animals find their forever homes! 🐾

Rena and the Harrington family, thank you for thinking of our animals year after year and for turning Justin’s memory into something that makes a real difference in their lives. We’re so honored to be part of this special tradition. ❤️

Don’t let Hughey's small size fool you! He is a fun-loving, energetic little guy who’s always ready for his next adventure. Hughey loves his toys, enjoys spending time with people, and is a happy, outgoing pup with plenty of personality. He even joined us for our Tails on the Trails event and kept right up during the entire two-mile hike like a champ!

Hughey would make a wonderful companion for someone looking for a playful little buddy to join them on walks, enjoy playtime, and share in everyday adventures. He’d do best in a home with older, dog-savvy kids who understand how to respect his space. Hughey has luxating patellas, a common condition in small dogs that just means his kneecaps move a bit more than they should, but that isn't currently causing him any issues.
