People think veterinarians spend their days cuddling puppies and kittens.

And sure. There is some of that.

But when the team heads out for continuing education and nutrition training Standard Process Inc., what does Dr. Bhatt do?

A little veterinary medicine.
A little maintenance.
A little cleaning.
A little landscaping.

And an alarming amount of staring at plants wondering, “Is this enough water or am I about to commit a horticultural snafu?”

Meanwhile, Arjun wisely declined his invitation to work today. It was 90 degrees outside, and he chose air conditioning and life balance.

The glamorous side of owning a veterinary practice isn’t always glamorous.

Sometimes it’s scrubbing.
Sometimes it’s organizing.
Sometimes it’s assembling a break room.
Sometimes it’s wondering who keeps making messes around here.

(It’s all of us. The answer is all of us.)

Every clinic has a crew who does it all to make sure things runs smoothly, including our doctor!

Follow for more behind the scenes stuff with us here at BIVS - where the medicine is advanced, the projects never end, and the plants are doing their best.

We don’t really think about it, do we? It’s normal to grab a tennis ball and throw it for a game of fetch. We’re here to tell you that this is not the best thing for your dog. It can be deadly.

The simple rule: the ball’s diameter should always be wider than your dog’s jaw. Swipe through for everything else you need to know before the next game of fetch.

Most ball toys sold in the U.S. aren’t required to meet any pet safety standard. None. The Center for Pet Safety has documented dogs choking to death on ball toys during play, and in nearly every reported case, the pet parent couldn’t remove the ball in time.

Save this. Share it. Your fellow pet parents will thank you.

Tori and Michelle may look innocent, the picture of saintliness… but it’s suss…

We know they’re running a highly organized pet cuddling operation. You’ve seen the kiss-attack videos!

And before anyone points fingers, yes, there are other accomplices. They’re just not pictured here.

Have you seen Tori, Michelle, or other members of our team making your pet feel like he or she is the center of their world, and covering your pet with cuddles, kisses, belly rubs, ear scratches, and excessive compliments to make them feel loved and safe?

Can we get a witness? 🐾😇⬇️

We love our patients 🥰

Did you know that sleeping a lot is actually normal for most pets? It depends on their age, and what kind of animal they are.

Cats are nocturnal. They are literally built to sleep all day and be active at night. (Yes, that is why your cat is sprinting through the house at 2am.)

Dogs tend to follow your schedule more closely. Young dogs actually want to be awake and active more than they sleep. Puppies have a LOT of energy.

But senior dogs? They love their rest. Just like older people, older dogs need more sleep. Slower mornings, more naps, earlier bedtimes. That is completely normal.

The thing to pay attention to is not how much your pet sleeps. It is whether anything has changed from their normal. Sleeping more than usual, skipping meals, or losing interest in walks are the signs worth a call to your vet.

Every pet has their own normal. Learn yours.

Summer in Chicagoland hits fast. One week it’s 60 degrees, the next it’s 90 and humid, and your pet’s body is trying to keep up with all of it.

In Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, summer is governed by the Fire element and the Heart. That means it’s the season when pets who already run warm, those dogs who are always panting, always seeking cool surfaces, always restless, can tip into real imbalance if we’re not paying attention.

A few things worth watching this season:

Heat and humidity affect more than just hydration. In TCVM, excess Heat can show up as anxiety, skin flares, digestive upset, and sleep disruption. It’s not always about how much water they’re drinking.

Senior pets and pets with heart conditions need closer monitoring in summer. Heat stress puts real demand on the cardiovascular system. If your pet sees Dr. Fiakpui for cardiology, this is a good time to check in.

Food therapy can help. Cooling foods like cucumber, watermelon (flesh only, no rind or seeds), and white fish can support pets who tend to run hot. Ask us what’s appropriate for your individual pet before changing anything.

If your pet seems off this summer and you can’t quite put your finger on why, that’s worth a conversation. Sometimes the season itself is the diagnosis.

Save this for when you need it.

Something feels off with your pet at 11pm. Do you wait until morning? Drive across town to an emergency vet? Sit with Google and hope you’re reading the right thing?

We get it. And we wanted to make sure you had a real option.

When our clinic is closed, our pet parents still have access to a licensed veterinarian through our partnership with VetTriage. Available 24/7, including nights, weekends, and holidays. You connect live on video with a vet who will look at your pet, talk through what’s happening, and tell you what to do next. If it’s a true emergency, they’ll help coordinate care with the nearest emergency veterinary hospital.

So whether it’s a Sunday evening or 2am on a Tuesday, you’re not alone with that worried feeling.

Most pet parents navigating a cancer diagnosis are focused on conventional treatment, and that makes complete sense. But there’s a layer of care that works alongside chemo, radiation, and surgery that most people never hear about.

Ozone therapy works at the cellular level. It restores the body’s ability to use oxygen properly, supports the immune system, and helps create conditions where cancer cells are harder to sustain and conventional treatments work better.

At BIVS in Glenview, IL, Dr. Priya Bhatt incorporates ozone therapy into integrative cancer care for dogs and cats.

Tomorrow, May 29th at 12PM CST she’s teaching a free virtual lecture on exactly this. Register here - https://zfrmz.com/mJcii6scR5y1HLyg9Tjs
