🦵Taking a Closer Look at the Equine Stifle

When a horse develops hind-end lameness, decreased performance, or difficulty with certain movements, the stifle may be part of the problem.

➡️ So how do we look inside the joint?

Stifle arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows our surgeons to directly visualize the joint using a small camera while making small incisions. Like Dr O’Brien and intern Dr Dearrington here on this right stifle referred for acute synovitis.

Depending on the injury, arthroscopy can help us:
🔹 Evaluate cartilage and meniscal injuries
🔹 Further assess abnormalities found on imaging such as radiographs and ultrasound
🔹 Identify and treat certain joint injuries
🔹 Remove damaged tissue or debris when appropriate

Not every stifle problem requires surgery, but for the right patient, arthroscopy can provide valuable answers—and even treatment—when we need a closer look.

So, what exactly is a VCPR?

🐴 VCPR = Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship

A valid VCPR is required by law for veterinarians to prescribe or dispense medications for your horse. In simple terms, this means your veterinarian must have examined your horse within the required timeframe to maintain that relationship.

And yes… our front desk gets these calls every single day. 📞

We hear from both established and new clients who may be frustrated when they’re told a medication can’t simply be called in or dispensed. We completely understand the frustration—but our front desk team isn’t trying to make things difficult!

They’re simply doing their job by protecting our doctors’ licenses, following the law, and ultimately protecting your horse. ❤️

So the next time you hear, “We need to see your horse first…” remember: it’s not personal—and it’s definitely not pie-related. 🥧😂

Shockwave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), uses 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀 delivered through the skin into targeted tissues. We recommend every horse owner take a moment to consider these things 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 an emergency happens:

➕ 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐯𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧. This means you have a valid VCPR (Vet-Client-Patient Relationship). ⬅️ More info to come!

➕ 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞. Consider what level of care & treatment you are realistically able to pursue for your horse(s) before making those decisions in the emotional setting of an ER.

➕ 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 that may assist with routine & ER vet med expenses, such as 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆𝑪𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒕, which we accept at Pine Ridge.

Chelsea has lived in Oklahoma for the last 7 years, but Montana is her home. She spent her summers in Montana working on her family's cattle and hay farm. She has always loved animals but fell in love with vet med after she relocated to OK. Once here, she received her veterinary assistant certificate, then her Associates in Animal Science and now is working towards her Bachelor's degree all while working full time. She has worked in vet med for 7 years now, with the last two years at Pine Ridge.

My favorite thing about my job is that you never stop learning. Every day I learn something new even if it feels like the smallest, simplest thing.

My favorite thing about Pine Ridge is seeing all of the different horses and disciplines that they are used for. And of course when they make funny faces when I give them scratches.

Chelsea initially joined us as a daytime veterinary assistant and quickly became a standout surgery tech—plus a favorite among our ambulatory vets, too! She is incredibly talented in so many ways beyond veterinary medicine and is truly one of the hardest workers we know. She transitioned to an overnight vet assistant role to better accommodate her full-time school and family schedule and we definitely missed seeing her as much during the day. But knowing our patients were in such incredible hands at night gave us plenty of peace of mind!
