Most people see the beautiful result: a clean, freshly groomed pup looking and feeling their best.
What you don't always see is what happens on the grooming table.
Professional groomers work with scissors, clippers and other grooming tools very close to a dog's eyes, ears, skin, feet and other sensitive areas. We are trained to use these tools safely — but unlike a human sitting in a salon chair, our clients don't always understand that they need to stay still.
Some dogs are anxious or frightened.
Some are extremely excited and constantly moving.
Some pull their paws away, suddenly turn their heads, jump, twist or try to sit down while we're working.
Others may growl, snap or bite when they become uncomfortable or overwhelmed.
And sometimes that movement happens in a fraction of a second.
❤️ Our groomers will always do everything reasonably possible to keep your dog safe. But even with experience, patience and careful handling, grooming a moving animal carries some risk, and minor accidents can occasionally happen.
So how can we make grooming safer?
Start grooming puppies early so they become comfortable being handled. At home, regularly touch their paws, ears, face and tail and reward calm behavior.
Keep your dog on a regular grooming schedule. Severely tangled or matted coats can make grooming more difficult, uncomfortable and risky.
Please tell your groomer about anxiety, aggression, previous grooming incidents, medical concerns or sensitive areas — even if you think it isn't important. The more we know, the better we can adjust our approach.
For dogs with significant anxiety or behavioral challenges, shorter appointments, more frequent visits, behavioral training, or a conversation with your veterinarian about safe anxiety-management options may make an enormous difference.
And sometimes the safest decision a groomer can make is to stop the groom.
A perfect haircut is never more important than the safety and well-being of your dog or the person caring for them.
At GroomXpress, beautiful grooming matters — but safety will always come first.
