Dogs’ visual systems are designed to detect movement first and object identity second — and this is well supported by peer‑reviewed research.

Dogs are highly sensitive to:

🔹speed

🔹direction

🔹sudden changes

🔹erratic patterns

Here’s the evidence behind it:

Dogs have high temporal resolution, meaning they detect rapid movement better than humans (Byosiere et al., 2018, Psychonomic Bulletin & Review).

They detect motion changes at lower thresholds than humans (Coile & O’Keefe, 1988, Physiology & Behavior).

Their static visual acuity is poor (approx. 20/75–20/80), so still objects are harder to identify (Miller & Murphy, 1995, JAVMA).

Their retinas contain a high density of motion‑sensitive ganglion cells (Peichl, 1992, Journal of Comparative Neurology).

The brain processes movement and emotional relevance in the right hemisphere before object identity in the left (Siniscalchi et al., 2018, Animal Cognition).

What this means for behaviour:

A dog may react instantly to a moving object long before they know what it is.
This isn’t “overreacting”. It’s the natural processing order of the canine visual system: movement → relevance → identification.

Many reactions are sensory‑driven, rather than behavioural choices.
