It’s official; Labor Day weekend is here! 🎉

Keep your critters safe & well this long summer weekend.

In September 2016, we were invited to the White House where HALTER Project received two national awards: one for Individual Preparedness and another for Community Preparedness Call to Action. It’s hard to believe that was 10 years ago this month!

Who knew one year later, in October 2017, we would all be staring into, and fleeing from, a beast of a wildfire driven by hurricane-force winds that destroyed huge swaths of our community, and ultimately united us in loss and recovery!!

HALTER Project was born in the Valley of the Moon in 2013. We saw a need to fill a gap in info and resources to guide animal guardians in making plans for emergencies and disasters. We hit the ground running and never stopped.

Whether you have one horse or donkey in your backyard, or dozens in barns and pastures, the guidelines for assessing risks and creating an Emergency Action Plan are the same for everyone. Maintaining a moderate level of readiness year-round helps prevent a stressful and risky last-minute panic to prepare!

Having a Weather Alert Routine and prep checklist that you review during “blue-sky” times, then practice when worriesome weather conditions are forecast, will reduce risks and keep everyone calmer and safer when you need to move quickly.
You also need a Shelter-in-Place (SIP) plan for animals who cannot be moved, or circumstances when evacuation is not possible.

This Fire & Storm-Ready Guide and Checklists include recommendations and checklists for both Animal Evacuation and Shelter-in-Place planning and preparedness. Download your copy today!

When a wildfire moves fast, the plan for a household needs to cover every member of it, four legged and otherwise.

That’s exactly the gap Halter Project fills. Since 2013, this Sonoma County based organization has trained first responders, veterinarians, and everyday animal owners to work as one team before, during, and after disaster, through animal disaster response training, large animal technical rescue courses, and free preparedness guides for pets, equines, and livestock.

This year, HALTER Project is returning as a sponsor of the 2026 Wildfire Leadership Summit. It’s a fitting partnership: community preparedness isn’t complete until it includes every member of the household. We’re grateful to HALTER Project for helping communities keep their people and their animals safer, and together.
