Having this crazy young girl has taught me a lot, especially that you need to practice what you preach.
She still gets to be a wild dog, but we also work on her strength and conditioning.

Esme is not a fan of doing her exercises longer than 1 minute.

Happy Memorial Day 💚

The town of Glastonbury will be constructing a sidewalk that goes though the entrance of the clinic driveway the week of May 18th through May 22nd. Only half of the driveway will be usable at this time. We are still open for normal appointments but the driveway will not be able to accommodate trailers during this time.

SURPRISE! Starting in May we're opening new days and hours!

Hind end awareness is your dog’s ability to know where their back legs are and how to move them with control. It’s a key foundation for balance, coordination, injury prevention, and overall athleticism—whether your pup is a weekend hiker or a competitive athlete 🐾

🐾 Why it matters:
• Improves balance & stability
• Builds strength in the hind limbs
• Supports joint health and injury prevention
• Boosts confidence

💪 And don’t forget core stabilization!
Your dog’s core (abs, back, and hip muscles) is what supports every movement they make. Without a stable core, hind limb exercises are much less effective—and can even lead to compensation or strain.

A strong core:
• Helps transfer power from the back legs to the rest of the body
• Improves posture and alignment
• Enhances balance and coordination
• Reduces risk of injury by supporting the spine and joints

🐶 Simple exercises in this video:
• Backing up – Great for engaging core and rear leg muscles. Once they're comfortable you can start adding different surfaces/textures.
• Sit-to-stand repetitions – Builds strength and control

The head position influences how the dog distributes weight throughout their body. Their head held above the spine level shifts more weight to their hind end muscles, while the head below the spine level shifts weight through their front-end muscles and core.

Put a treat in your hand, with your dog in a standing position to move the treat up above their spine level, then move the treat down below their spine level. Did you notice them shifting their weight depending on the head movement?

Something to keep an eye on is if when you do that exercise, does your dog shift their feet or do they stay still? If they shift their feet, then they may need more core strength. The core is the biggest factor in connecting the dog’s front end to the hind end to help stabilize the spine and smooth coordination skills.

Does your dog need some core work? Contact us to set up an evaluation! We'll show you exercises to do for what your dog specifically needs.

🦴 Start having your dog stand with their forelimbs on something higher than their hindlimbs. It’s easy to keep them still with food. You want your dog to have a straight back with their head in a comfortable neutral head position.

🦴 Start slow and easy with lots of rest if they need it! Once you practice this exercise more frequently with your dog, then it’ll become easier to perform, and they’ll be strong enough to have the correct form. You can slowly move their food left and right to make their balance a little harder.

🦴 What does it work? Overall, it’s a great back stretch, hind limb and groin stretch. But it also challenges coordination and proprioception controlling those muscles and overall body control.

🦴 Repetition matters! Don’t expect your pet to get it right away. Over time, their strength will build up, balance will become better controlled, and their endurance will help them stabilize themselves longer.

💪 Once they’ve mastered their front stabilization, you can make it more challenging by putting their hind end on something. This challenges their stability even more.
