Emmett has been working on his medication retrieve during this stay and train! He started with a dumbell and is now getting up finding, and bringing the medication bag on cue. the next step is to work on finding it from different locations. Good boy, Emmett!

September is National Service Dog Awareness Month!
Here are just a few of the things that service dog handlers want you to know. Remember to be respectful, let them work, and talk directly to the handler. We are so proud of all of our working service dog teams, teams in training, and everyone who is doing their best on this journey. Service dogs change lives, we are so incredibly grateful for and impressed by them every single day.

Watch Benson work on his auto leave in real time! Right before I started videoing he tried to pick this wrapper up on the ground, so I videoed how I work through it.
I start by marking and rewarding him for noticing it but not moving towards it. This then progresses to him disengaging on his own and walking by it. We are able to move through it quickly because he has started this skill, but we need to continue working on it in new places!

"You don't look disabled" is something service dog handlers hear often. Disabilities are not always visible, and the same disability doesn't effect everyone the same. A disability, as defined by the ADA in the United States is "a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities". Disabilities may be visible, they may not be, but the "obviousness" of a disability does not define how it impacts an individuals life. Disability does not have a look, an age, a gender, or a type, a disability is defined by how it impacts an individuals ability to live.

Public transportation is a part of life for most service dogs, and is something we like to introduce young to ensure they are comfortable with it!
Before scaling up to trains or planes, buses are a great place to start. Benson has watched buses before, so in this outing we added in getting on and off of them and practicing sitting down.
The next step will be taking a short bus ride!

Access for service dog teams is NOT optional. It isn't a preference, it isn't something that sets your business apart, it is a basic right.
Service dogs function as part of their handler's medical care, it is their right to have them. So regardless of what you think you know, or you've heard, go check out the service dog team laws in the Americans with Disabiltiies Act, or your countries specific policies and make sure you're up to date to best serve the individuals in your area

Want your dog to learn to drop items instead of running off with them? In addition to working on this with toys in play, my new favorite way to teach a "drop" or "out" is Chirag Patel's drop protocol!
You start by pairing the word with high value treats on the floor, so you cue "drop" and then scatter the treats. You repeat this until your dog is anticipating the treats by looking toward the floor when they hear the cue. We then add distractions, building up to the dog holding low value items they are likely to trade and making it harder from there.

Welfare is our number 1 priority for our dogs. In our programs, this means all service dogs must be free from affected genetic conditions, joint, eye, heart, and autoimmune conditions. While these issues may not effect a dog in the moment, the added risk or symptoms in the long run is absolutely not worth it for the dogs or their handlers. This is just another reason we are so grateful for our vet team, breeders, and board members to help us prioritize the welfare of each dog not just today but for their lifetime!
