About every couple of years I am reminded that c**t-starting isn’t a ‘one size fits most’ & that there will always be one or two that will push you to generate new ideas.
While 30 days in my program generally looks similar, sometimes what you hand back has just as many components on the list but not all of the same ones.
For example.. My good buddy Mellow here. Mellow is a good citizen. He’s easy to catch on pasture, he stands quietly tied, he’s happy to be brushed & pampered, he picks up his feet like a gentleman, has no qualms about fly spray or detangler, and is good to saddle & bridle. He is hobble savvy, dog savvy & rope savvy. Mellow is soft in the face, guides around & is developing a really nice stop/back up. He is point & shoot when it comes to deadfall, water crossing, embankments & the horse trailer too. You know what else!? You can safely mount & dismount from either side, saddled or ba****ck & crawl all over him.
What does Mellow lack you ask? Motor.
We walk & trot, a LOT. Rides are short. 20 minutes or less. C**ts like Mellow demand to be rewarded for effort, no matter the quality or duration. Is it ideal not to be loose-rein loping across the pasture? No. Do I feel like it will be a big issue looking forward? Also no. A trainable mind & consistent degree of try is enough for this particular horse.
And for those of you who don’t know what the other side of that looks like.. it presents itself in tail swishing, ear pinning, head/neck shaking, kicking out, rearing up, laying down, hard to catch, unhappy horses.
So, less is more at this stage & I have no doubts that with time & maturity he too will bloom!
