An interesting new research reveals the connection between Labrador liver health and copper. What caught my attention was the discovery that a young Labrador, who appeared perfectly healthy and had normal routine blood-test results, was found to have excess copper accumulating in her liver. It's the sort of finding that makes you wonder how much we might be missing when everything appears to be perfectly normal.
The research, conducted at the University of California, Davis, focuses on a condition known as copper-associated hepatopathy, in which excessive copper accumulates in the liver and can eventually cause inflammation and damage. Researchers are also investigating whether new diagnostic methods could help veterinarians identify the condition earlier, potentially without the need for invasive procedures.

I am often asked why Labradors Love Water, Mud, and Your Clean Floors... My profound answer is that there are two kinds of people in this world: those who believe a clean floor should remain clean, and those who live with Labradors. I suspect most Labrador owners begin their journey belonging firmly to the first group. They invest in attractive flooring, select furniture with considerable care, and perhaps even imagine that a large dog can be taught to wipe his feet before entering the house.
Then the dog discovers water... especially, muddy water... and all bets are off!
A Labrador's relationship with water is one of the more delightful examples of how differently dogs and people interpret the same situation. To us, a puddle may be a minor inconvenience, something to step around on the way to the car. To a Labrador, it represents an opportunity that ought not to be wasted.

The Labrador was never meant to be a trend... Every so often, a breed becomes fashionable. You can usually tell when it happens because the questions change. People stop asking what the dog is like to live with, what the breed was meant to do, what kind of family rhythm suits him, or whether they are prepared for the next twelve years of mud, tennis balls, shedding, devotion, and very opinionated looks from the kitchen floor. Instead, they ask what color is available.
I understand the impulse. Labradors are beautiful dogs. A well-bred English Labrador Retriever, with that generous head, kind eye, strong body, and steady expression, has a way of making even a perfectly sensible person think, “Well, maybe now is the time.” I have seen it happen many times. I have also seen what happens when someone falls in love with the idea of a Labrador before they understand the reality of one.
That is where someone who has lived with the breed long enough has to slow the conversation down.
