Welcome to Furry Beginnings, where pets are our inspiration. Like most successful businesses, I started with a dream. And like most dreams, I had a muse...a shepherd/collie mix named Mason. I adopted him from an Arizona rescue organization in 2010

After leaving corporate America and waking up to Mason's cold nose one morning, I realized that I had never really been satisfied with any of the groomers we used. Those cold, metal cages bothered me! I wanted to take him someplace that adored him as much as I do. Before I realized it, Furry Beginnings was born.

Keeping That Puppy Coat Happy & Healthy
Your puppy had their first grooming appointment… now what?

One of the BEST things you can do for your puppy is keep them on a regular grooming schedule from the very beginning!
It can be tempting to wait until they’re shaggy, dirty or starting to tangle before booking their next appointment, especially while that soft puppy coat still seems pretty easy to manage..
However regular grooming during puppyhood is about so much more than keeping them looking cute.

Consistent appointments help:
🐾Prevent little tangles from turning into uncomfortable mats
🐾Keep nails at a healthy length
🐾 Keep ears, skin and coat clean and cared for
🐾Helps your puppy get used to brushing, bathing, drying, clippers, scissors and nail care
🐾Making grooming a normal part of life instead of something that only happens every few months meaning less anxiety!
🐾 Prepare them for their adult coat as their texture begins to change

For many puppies who will need lifelong grooming, we recommend staying on approximately a 4–6 week schedule, depending on their breed, coat, haircut and how much maintenance is being done at home.

And remember your puppy doesn’t have to get a full haircut every visit! Sometimes an appointment may simply be a bath, brush, nails and a little face, feet or f***y trim up. The important part is keeping up with their coat AND keeping that grooming routine familiar.

A regular grooming schedule now can make a HUGE difference in the kind of grooming dog they become later.

MEET THE GROOMER: TORI! 🐾

Last but certainly not least in our Meet the Team series, it’s time to introduce Tori! 💜

If you have a Yorkie, Shih Tzu, or another tiny little baby, there’s a very good chance Tori is already in love. She has a special place in her heart for the little ones and especially loves working with her Yorkies & Shih Tzus!

Tori is also one of our resident sensitive souls. She has a big heart, feels everything deeply, and has plenty of love to give the babies on her table. Your dog isn’t just an appointment to Tori they’re probably getting a new best friend.

And every best friend deserves a soundtrack.

Tori LOVES to sing while she grooms, so depending on the day, your pup may be getting a haircut, cuddles AND their own private concert. We can’t guarantee they’ll enjoy her song choices…but they don’t seem to complain.

She loves making those little faces cute, loving on the tiny babies, and bringing plenty of personality to Furry Beginnings every day.

***FUN WARNING: Tori may become emotionally attached to your Shih Tzu, sing them an entire concert, and seriously consider keeping them. Please check that you actually received your dog back at pickup.

PUPPY GROOMING SERIES — DAY 3 🐾
What Happens at Your Puppy’s First Groom?

Your puppy’s first grooming appointment isn’t about getting the “perfect haircut” it’s about creating a positive experience that sets them up for a lifetime of grooming success.

At Furry Beginnings, we believe the first few appointments are all about trust, patience, and learning.

From new sounds, smells, and having to stand on a table it’s a lot for a new little one!

During their first visit, we introduce things slowly and gently. We watch their body language, give them breaks when needed, offer lots of reassurance, and work at their pace.

Sometimes that means your puppy leaves with a perfectly finished haircut.

Sometimes it means we accomplish a bath, blow dry, nails and a little face/feet/sanitary trimming.

And sometimes the biggest accomplishment of the day is simply that your puppy learned:

“Hey… grooming isn’t scary!”

And THAT is a successful first groom.

We will never sacrifice your puppy’s comfort just to finish a haircut. There will be plenty of time for adorable hairstyles later first, we want to build a puppy who feels safe and confident being groomed.

Regular appointments every 4–6 weeks help build on those positive experiences and turn grooming into a normal part of your puppy’s life. Also at the end of each grooming you’ll receive a grooming report with puppy homework, things to do at home to help your puppy become even more comfortable with grooming!

Next up in our meet the team series is one of the people helping keep all the babies fresh, fluffy and feeling their best.. Sierra!! 💜💙

Sierra is one of our amazing bathers, and to say she has a big heart for dogs might be an understatement! If they walk through our door chances are Sierra has already decided they're her baby!

With her fun goofy personality she makes sure the pups in her care are getting a whole experience! Expect your pup to be spoiled with plenty of snuggles, a few songs, lots of sweet talk and all the patience they need!

Sierra is also our deshedding QUEEN!👑 Give this girl a fluffy dog and she is in her element! Also the best part.. Dogs genuinely get excited to see her, they come running through the door ready to spend time with her!

***Fun warning: Sierra may return your dog significantly less hairy, slightly spoiled, and convinced they have a second mom!💜***

🐶PUPPY GROOMING SERIES — DAY 2 🐾

Preparing Your Puppy for Their First Groom

A puppy’s grooming journey doesn’t start at the salon it actually starts at home!

There are lots of simple things you can do every day to help your puppy feel more confident and comfortable when it’s time for their first grooming visit.

** Touch those paws!
Gently hold and massage each paw, touch between their toes, and lightly handle their nails. This helps prepare them for nail trims and paw cleanups.

** Practice handling their ears & face.
Gently touch their ears, chin, muzzle, and around their eyes. Groomers need to work around all of these areas, so learning that being touched there is safe is a BIG puppy skill! Once they're comfortable with you handling them try a spoon to around their eyes this prepares them for sc******ng around their face and an electric toothbrush as well, helps prepare them for the clippers!

** Introduce brushing and combing early.
Even if your puppy’s coat doesn’t look like it needs brushing yet, start practicing! Keep sessions short, positive, and rewarding. A few minutes at a time is perfect. This is a great bonding experience for you and your pup as well!

** Get them used to different sounds.
Hair dryers, vacuums, electric toothbrushes, and other household sounds can help puppies become more comfortable with the noises they’ll eventually hear in the grooming salon.

**Practice standing still… but don’t expect perfection!
Place your puppy on a safe, non-slip surface and practice standing for a few seconds while you gently handle them. Reward them afterward and slowly build up their confidence.

** Most importantly: KEEP IT POSITIVE!

Your puppy doesn’t need to be perfectly behaved before their first groom, that’s what puppy appointments are for!

We don’t expect babies to know how to be groomed. Grooming is a learned skill. Our goal is to introduce everything slowly, build trust, and teach your puppy that grooming can be a safe and positive part of their life.

* Short sessions
* Lots of praise
* Plenty of treats
* Never force it

A couple things that work well to keep them preoccupied while working with them are high value treats they only get during their grooming sessions or lick mats with dog safe peanut butter. Make it a fun and rewarding experience so they come to enjoy their grooming sessions.

Those little moments at home can make a HUGE difference in creating a confident, happy grooming pup for years to come. 🐾

If you've ever looked at a groom and thought, "Okay... How did they do that?!" there's a good chance Emily had something to do with it!
Emily is one of our talented grooming artists, and she sees every pup as a blank canvas. She especially loves getting creative with fun unique haircuts. If there's a new style to try you can bet Emily is ready to give it a go!
It's not just her creativity that makes her special. Emily has an amazing personality and has a natural way with the babies on her table. She's wonderful with puppies and is known to carry on conversations with her furry clients while she works!

🐶Puppy Grooming 101: When should your puppy start grooming?
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is, “They’re still a puppy, they don’t need a haircut yet wait till they’re 1 year old then get them one.”
However, puppy’s first grooming appointments aren’t necessarily about the actual haircut. It’s about the lessons they learn to prepare them for a lifetime of grooming needs. Just like you need to housetrain, potty train and teach your puppy basic manners they also need to learn how to be groomed!

Once your veterinarian says your puppy is appropriately protected to visit a grooming environment it’s a great time to introduce them to the professional grooming world!

Now take a moment to step into your puppies’ paws. Think about all the new and sometimes scary things that happen during their first grooming:
• Meeting someone completely new!
• New Environment with all kinds of smells, sounds, sights!
• Standing on a grooming table
• Getting in a bathtub
• The feeling of being blow dried
• Clippers buzzing against the body
• Brushing and Combing
• Shiny scissors by their eyes
• Having their face and paws and body handled differently
• Having their nails clipped

That’s a lot for a new little one isn’t it?! So you can imagine how overwhelming it can be for a precious little puppy!
Early appointments give us the opportunity to slowly introduce these things with lots of positivity, lots of patience, and lots of love and understanding.

At Furry Beginnings we don’t expect puppies to be perfect. They’re babies! Their first appointments are all about building trust and teaching them that grooming doesn’t have to be scary it can be fun and full of love!
The beautiful haircut will come with time. First we work on the foundation and confidence that will last them a lifetime!
