Flying Changes Equine Rescue was born in March of 2015 when a local equine rescue announced abruptly that it was closing its doors. Three women, current and former rescue volunteers Sarah Susa, Annamaria Carrington, and Angie Dannelley, stepped forward to take responsibility for the horses left behind. After some major soul-searching, these women decided that rather than simply finding homes for t

hese horses, they wanted to continue with the mission of helping abused, neglected, and abandoned horses in the Pittsburgh area, and Flying Changes was born. A “flying change” is a movement in riding in which the leading leg of the canter is changed while the horse is in the air, without breaking gait. Done correctly, the flying change is a beautiful movement, requiring strong communication and trust between horse and rider. At “Flying Changes,” we seek to replicate this communication by learning the specific strengths and needs of each of our rescues and matching our horses with the perfect forever homes, benefitting both horses and humans alike. Flying Changes took on our first official rescue (in addition to the five horses surrendered to us at our formation) in April of 2015 – a kind, gentle Morgan pony our Facebook followers named “Tilly,” who came to us severely underweight, matted, and sick. A month after Tilly’s arrival, she is clear-eyed and peppy, and slowly putting on weight. Watching Tilly’s transformation has motivated and inspired our young organization, and we look forward to helping horses like Tilly for years to come.

COURTESY POST: 🌟 Luna — Ready for Her Next Chapter 🌟

We are partnering with Second Chance Equine Association to find a home for a mare whose elderly owner lost her beloved gelding and wants her mare, Luna, to find a loving home with other horses. Here's what Second Chance has to say about this lovely girl:

Luna is a 22‑year‑old, 16HH off‑the‑track Thoroughbred who has spent the last several months settling in with us and showing us just how kind, affectionate, and people‑oriented she truly is. We’ve tried so hard to get a good picture of her, but she has made it abundantly clear that she is not the most photogenic member of the herd. What she lacks in camera readiness, she more than makes up for with goofy expressions and a knack for keeping us laughing.

Luna came to us after being placed through another rescue, so we’re uncertain about her history. We do know that at some point she experienced a tendon injury in a hind leg, though we don’t know when it occurred or which leg was affected. The people at that rescue shared that Luna made it clear she was not happy being saddled, and they ultimately chose not to attempt riding her. Her reaction may have stemmed from an unpleasant past experience under saddle, possible discomfort related to her prior injury, a pinched nerve, improper saddle fit, or just plain sassiness. We want to be upfront that Luna could potentially be rideable with veterinary clearance, patience, and a firm but KIND hand—but then again she may not be.

Luna does experience some anxiety in a stall, but she’s been making steady progress as we work with her on confidence, grooming, and ground manners. She genuinely tries to please and responds beautifully to calm, consistent handling.

She also thrives in the company of other horses and settles best when she has equine friends nearby. She gets along well in turnout and enjoys being part of a herd, making her a wonderful fit for a home with social horses.

Luna does have a racing tattoo on her lip, but it’s extremely blurry, and we haven’t been able to gather any additional information from it. We’ve only loaded her on a trailer once, and she handled it like a pro.

She is up to date on vaccinations, and her hoof care is current, so she’s ready for the next step in her journey.

If you’d like to learn more about Luna, we’d love to talk with you. Call Ashley Rulli with Second Chance Equine Association at 724-954-7904. Serious inquiries only please.

As always, thank you and please SHARE this post so we can find the right home for Luna. 💛🐴

COURTESY POST: Ellie and Butter

Ellie and Butter's owner is facing a devastating and progressive health condition that is forcing the family to find these two a new home.

Ellie and Butter are VERY loved, very healthy, and both are up to date on all medical care, vaccines, deworming, hoof care. Allegheny Equine Associates has been their vet for years.

We are hoping to place them together due to Ellie's age and the fact that they are the very best of friends.

Ellie is an aged (30+) Quarter Horse mare - healthy with no chronic health issues. She is affectionate, has good ground manners, and no stable vices. She loves her pasture time and is easy to work around on the ground. Because of her age, she's looking for a companion home.

Butter is a 13 year old gelded Miniature Horse. He also loves his pasture time and kicking up his heels. His turnout on pasture must be limited with a grazing muzzle due to a history of founder. A new home with a dry lot would be ideal so he could be out more. He is also affectionate and has no stable vices, but would be best with a confident handler so he doesn't attempt to test boundaries! :)

If you're interested in learning more about these two, please reach out. And as always, your comments and shares help to find our horses their forever homes!

COURTESY POST UPDATE: The interest in Chloe, Hope, and Otto has been overwhelming. We believe we’ve found homes for each of them. Please continue to watch our page though - we have several horses that need homes we’ll be posting in the upcoming weeks.

We are assisting an elderly horse owner in the Sharon, PA area who is no longer physically able to care for all the animals on her farm. Her property was once a boarding facility, and over the years several owners stopped paying board altogether and abandoned their horses. She has asked Flying Changes for help finding new homes as soon as possible for three Thoroughbreds:

Chloe is 13–14-year-old, 16.2 hh chestnut Thoroughbred mare with a blaze and four white stockings. While much of her history is unknown, Chloe was lightly ridden until her owner stopped paying board. Chloe is a flashy girl with all that chrome, and we could easily see her doing well in the show ring (flatwork only). Although she IS a mare, she’s been easy to handle and work around.

Hope is a 7-year-old, 16.1 hh dark bay Thoroughbred mare that came from a severe abuse and abandonment situation in West Virginia several years ago. She is a quiet, sensitive soul who will shut down when stressed. She truly needs her own person — someone patient and understanding who will take the time to earn her trust and show her consistent love. Hope is sound and broke to ride. In the right hands, this sweet girl has the potential to blossom.

Otto is a 15–17-year-old, 15.3 hh dark bay Thoroughbred gelding that was signed over to the farm owner last year. He's an easy going, pleasant guy who could use some extra groceries. He loves attention and is always first at the gate whinnying when he sees someone he knows. Otto is sound, broke to ride, and uncomplicated — the type of horse who would fit nicely into many different family or pleasure riding situations. He has been straightforward to handle and a joy to have around.

🐴 All three horses are currently barefoot and scheduled to have their hooves trimmed this Friday. They're all easy to handle and work around. They were vaccinated this fall but due to financial constraints haven’t gotten their spring shots.
📍 Location: Sharon, PA area
💙 There is no adoption fee for Flying Changes Courtesy Post horses — they are free to the best suited home.
📩 If you’re interested in giving Chloe, Hope, or Otto (or all three!) a new home along with the love and attention they deserve, PM us. Please share information about yourself, your farm or boarding facility, and the farrier and veterinary service you use or plan to use.

Thank you for helping us help these horses find the soft landings they deserve. As always, PLEASE SHARE 💙🐎

UPDATE: We believe we’ve found a home for Tito AND his huge ears!! Thanks to everyone who contacted us about this awesome little guy. Updates will be coming soon.

COURTESY POST: TITO

Guys. Check out this adorable little a$$!!

This is Tito. He's six. He stands about 48" high.
His ears are also approximately 48" high.

He's a sweet dude who is a little bit nervous, and needs a gentle, patient home to help coax him out of his shell.

Tito's human-dad is facing some crummy health issues and his human-mom can't devote the time to working with Tito right now while she's taking care of her husband.

She wants to find Tito a knowledgable and safe home where he'll continue to learn and thrive.

He's healthy, and an easy keeper. Easy to get along with in a herd.

Cute. As. A. Button.

He's is a bit skittish around people, and actually is less fearful of men than women, but comes around when he gets to know you. He is nervous about the farrier, and needs someone who is patient and kind to show him the whole thing isn't so bad.

If you have the time and the love to continue to convince Tito that the world is actually an ok place, reach out to us.

And as always, your comments and shares help us to find forever homes for all of our hoofed friends!

Ella‘s recent adoption was a special one, for a number of reasons… and I’m grateful that The Chronicle Of The Horse thought so too, and wanted to share this story!

"In elementary school, when I started taking weekly lessons, it became quickly apparent that I had the loose-screw common to all equestrians," writes blogger Sarah Susa. "I’d have rather spent time in that dark, musty, spiderwebbed barn than absolutely anywhere else in the world."

Read the story in the comments.

Hi all! Sarah here - owner of Black Dog Stables where all our blanket inventory is (that lots of you are interested in).

My husband busted his knee on Monday and needs surgery, so it's going to take our team some time to answer your individual messages and comments about specific blankets.

We're hoping to inventory what we have tonight and at least post that information for you.

If anyone is close to Gibsonia and wants to come browse what we have, you're welcome to stop by the farm tonight between 4:30-8.

PLEASE TEXT SARAH IF YOU PLAN TO STOP BY: 412-302-5181.

I'll also be around off and on Friday through Sunday - again, PLEASE TEXT TO SET UP A VISIT... I can accommodate visits for sure, but have to navigate a lesson program, 4-year-old human kid, and broken spouse!!

ALSO: WE HAVE THREE TUBS OF MISCELLANEOUS HORSE STUFF FOR SALE: hay bags, various boots, two dozen breeches (including Tailored Sportsmans!), a few hunt coats, buckets, and LOTS of other random stuff that you can go through!

There's also a PILE of recently-donated blankets that we haven't had a chance to fold and label yet that you're welcome to go through and make an offer on if you want to stop in person!!

Otherwise, please give us a second to post a list here later today rather than answer individual messages.

Thanks for understanding and being patient!!

Here's a warm and fuzzy on this cold, winter day...

This handsome guy came to Flying Changes through a multi-animal seizure situation a few months ago. We can't give a whole lot of details due to the nature of the case... but long story short, when he came across our radar, via our friends at Allegheny Equine Associates, he was a four-year-old, relatively unhandled stallion who had spent most of his short life closed up in a barn.

Dr. Nadine at Allegheny Equine Associates reached out to us at the rescue. She generously offered to take the stallion directly to the clinic to remove some ... man bits... if Flying Changes would help with his placement once he'd had some time to heal. Of course we agreed.

However, we had very little work to do when it came time to finding him a new home... one of Allegheny Equine's techs, Paige, fell quickly in love with this dude. She's been a rider for years, but yesterday, she welcomed home her very first horse, and we couldn't be happier for the pair.

Congrats, Paige, and congrats to the cutest little (new) gelding on the planet! We can't wait to see where the future takes you two, together!!
