As we get closer to the 4th of July, here is your annual reminder of pet safety tips! 🇺🇸

Safe and Sound inside🏡🐱: Before the fireworks begin, set up a “safe space” for your pet to ride out the holiday. This space should have minimal to no windows, and be filled with comfort items (familiar blankets, toys, treats)

Fireworks and Toxic Hazards🎆 🚫: Keep your pets away from both lit and unlit fireworks. Fireworks can cause physical burns, and also cause toxicity if ingested. Keep human food and drink contained and ensure trash can lids are secure

Identification and Microchipping📈📋: Pets may panic and attempt escape during fireworks. Please ensure your pet has an updated identification tag and microchip information is up-to-date. Have a recent picture of your pet handy in the event they get lost

Behavior and Medication🐕‍🦺💊: If your pet is prone to anxiety, call your vet NOW to fill anxiety medications or inquire about anxiety reducing products/practices

What to do if your pet gets out on the 4th⬇️
✅Stay Calm. Don’t Chase.
If your pet is in flight mode, chasing or yelling can push them further away into danger. Move slowly and gently.
✅Share Details Widely
Utilize local lost and found social media groups to post your pet’s photo and information. Any key details like time, date, location, and distinguishing features should be included
✅Contact local shelters and rescues
If your pet is found, shelter staff can scan for a microchip and contact you (keep information up-to-date!). If your pet has not been taken to a shelter yet, calling and informing the staff is proactive as they will have your information on hand. Be mindful that this holiday is one of the busiest of the year for shelters

🗓️ From July 4th-July 6th, animal shelters across the U.S see a 30-60% increase in lost pets entering their facilities. This makes July 4th the single most common day of the year for lost pets in the country. The percentage of pets that return home after becoming lost on July 4th remains under 20%. Be proactive and remain aware about 4th of July safety tricks to ensure your pet stays safe!

Let’s talk about Ehrlichiosis 🦠

Ehrlichiosis is a tick borne illness that is caused by the infectious bacteria Ehrlichia. The bacterium attacks white blood cells in dogs. 🐶

Some common symptoms include:
-Fever
-Lethargy
-Depression
-Anorexia
-Weight loss
-Englarged lymph nodes
-Lameness
-Vomiting
-Diarrhea
-Cough
-Abnormal bruising or bleeding
-Neurological signs

Cytauxzoonosis ‘Bobcat Fever’ 🦠🐱

What is Cytauxzoonosis? ⬇️
Also called Bobcat fever, this is a deadly tick borne illness in cats caused by the parasite Cytauxzoon Felis (which is carried naturally by bobcats). In domestic cats, this disease progresses rapidly and is often fatal.

Why is bobcat fever main stream in Kentucky right now? 🐎🌾
•Veterinarians in Kentucky are reporting more cases than in previous years - the Lone Star tick is the primary carrier tick, however, the American Dog Tick can also transmit the parasite. Expanding tick ranges and climate changes have allowed the disease to spread farther north, including into Kentucky.

Symptoms🐱🌡️
Signs and symptoms generally appear 5-15 days after a tick bite
•High fever (104-106F)
•Lethargy
•Loss of appetite
•Dehydration
•Jaundice
•Difficulty or rapid breathing
•Seizures
•Respiratory distress

Treatment🩺💊
Without treatment, the death rate stands at 97%. With aggressive treatment, survival rates stand between 60-75%. Early diagnosis and hospitalization improve outcomes, however, the prognosis is still guarded.

Prevention💉🐈
There is NO commercial vaccination for bobcat fever at this time. The best prevention is: year-round flea and tick prevention, keeping cats indoors when possible, checking cats regularly for ticks and promptly removing them if found, and educating yourself on tick identification and resources. Indoor cats are at risk for bobcat fever. You can carry in ticks on shoes or clothing, or other pets can carry ticks inside as well.

Pet Summer Safety☀️🐶

With warm sunny days approaching fast, we thought it was a good time to remind everybody of some pet summer safety tips!

➡️ Heat Safety
-Limit outdoor time in extreme heat (85 F or above)
-Provide plenty of fresh and clean water in an insulated bowl
-Offer a shady space if outdoors
-Avoid hot surfaces (asphalt and sand)
-Familiarize yourself with and watch for signs of heat stroke
Know that short muzzle breeds (pugs, bulldogs, persians, boxers), seniors, overweight pets, and pets with pre-existing medical issues are at higher risk
➡️Water Safety
-NEVER leave pets unsupervised near pools, lakes, or oceans
-Use a dog life jacket in open water
-After swimming, ensure your pet is rinsed off of any chlorine or salt
➡️Vehicle Safety
-Never leave pets in a parked car. Temperatures can rise to 100 F + in minutes
➡️Holiday and Outdoor Safety
-Fireworks: Keep pets indoors, close windows, use sound masking, create a safe environment.
-Ensure your pet’s microchip information is accurate and up-to-date.
-Ensure you are in stock of pet anxiety medication if necessary.
-BBQs: Keep your pets away from hot grills. Do not feed cooked bones or human food. -Secure trash.
-Chemical treatments: Keep pets away from lawns treated with herbicides or fertilizers
