🩵We could not take such excellent care of the many animals at Scott County Humane Society without our volunteers! Every month we highlight one of our special volunteers – someone who donates their heart and time to the animals in our area who need it most. This month we are celebrating Dan Miller, our September 2026 Volunteer of the Month!
💊Dan’s father was a civil engineer and was transferred from place to place but he mainly grew up in Tennessee and Alabama. He moved to Kentucky when he attended Western Kentucky University for his undergraduate degree then enrolled in UK’s College of Pharmacy. He graduated from Pharmacy School in 1972 and has worked in and around Lexington ever since. He retired in 2011.
🐈⬛Dan has a big heart for animals. He has spent the last 10 years daily feeding and providing insulated shelters for homeless feral cats at the interstate. He has gotten as many of them trapped, spayed or neutered and released as humanly possible. He is about the only human they trust. They run from everyone else. Taking care of these cats is how he got involved with Scott County Humane Society. He rescued a very pregnant young cat that was dropped off at the interstate. He got her to trust him enough to get her in a pet carrier and took her home where she had 5 kittens in his office on a wing back chair 4 days later. He needed help with their adoptions, so he checked with all the nearby humane societies about becoming a volunteer. SCHS welcomed him with open arms and helped with the adoptions of the mom and babies. Dan has been working as a volunteer at Petsmart adoption events almost every Saturday since last December! He specializes in helping potential adopters select a specific animal by highlighting the animal’s best traits. He is great at building an emotional connection with these potential adopters. One of his favorite memories from volunteering at Petsmart is helping with the adoption of a dog named Roscoe. Roscoe was the perfect match for the adopter. Roscoe bonded instantly to the young man who adopted her. He says that adoption was so heart warming.
🐶Dan has lived in the Greenbriar subdivision in Lexington for 40 years with his wife Marjorie. They have been married for 54 years. He grew up with rat terrier mixed dogs and has had 4 dogs as an adult. His dachshund/terrier mix passed away last year. They currently have 8 cats, all rescues. Five of them have come from the interstate crew he cares for. Their names are Crempuff, Pearl, Funky (Rags), Ocee, Tofu, Nelly Belle, Caramell, Oliver.
🪙In his spare time he enjoys remodeling and renovating homes. He has also collected rare coins as a child which continued as an adult. His collection was sold at auction in 2000.
🐎Back in May he bid on the auction item in Scott County Humane Society’s “Let’s Build it for Them” Online Auction and won the Churchill Downs Millionaire’s Row Dining Room tickets. He wanted to do something nice for all the dedicated, hard working volunteers and board members at SCHS so he donated the tickets to us. This picture was taken at Churchill Downs, with Dan in the middle surrounded by some of our amazing volunteers. They had a wonderful time at Churchill Downs…great entertainment, fantastic food and an unbelievable view of the track from Millionaire’s Row Sky Terrace.
🙏🏼We are so blessed to have so many wonderful volunteers like Dan, but we can always use more help! Dan, your commitment makes a difference and we value you!
