I read something this weekend about a soul horse, and it really stuck with me. Maybe it’s because this mare has been there for me through pregnancy, postpartum, and so many seasons of life. Somewhere along the way, we’ve found our rhythm, our connection, and a whole lot of fun together.

I took a risk on Bella when I found her in a place that wasn’t exactly ideal. Watching that old video back, I can’t help but smile at the cowboy who kept calling her “a classy mare.” 🤠 He wasn’t wrong. 😉

She’s come so far, and so have I. This journey has never been about perfection or rushing the process. It’s about showing up, learning together, building trust, and enjoying the horse standing underneath me.

With everything this weekend brought full circle, I’m feeling especially grateful for this mare and the journey we’re on.

Proud of her progress. Proud of our progress. And pretty darn happy I took that chance on my classy mare. 🤎🐴✨

A special day at Groton House with my girl, Bella! ❤️🐴

We scored a 30.2 (69.8%) in Training 1, improving from last weekend with the SAME judge! Such a great testament to our progress, especially in a larger, scarier venue with horses schooling cross-country all around us.

Training 2 was a little more eventful 😂 Bikes behind the judge’s booth sent Bella into a buck during our canter transition. My first-ever 3 on a test, but hey, we got the lead! 🤣 35.2 (64.8%) to finish the day.

This week’s project: bike desensitization at camp tomorrow! 🚲 Funny enough, my dad wanted to throw away my bikes this week. He’s been obsessed with the dumpster lately. 🙄

But today was about so much more than scores. ❤️ Seeing familiar faces from different chapters of my life felt incredibly full circle: my childhood riding instructor, old barn friends, business partner trainers, Rowan’s Creek Equestrian who was a role model for me when I bought this property, and Alissa, who was such a rock for me during my pregnancy with Eden. Getting to see her with Eden now was so special. And a big thank you to my cousin Linda being there and finding my dad! Always so nice seeing you! ❤️

Today was my first time traveling to a show solo with both my horse and my three year old. 🥹

Everything felt full circle, and I’m so incredibly thankful. ❤️🐴

Wh***ey 🤎🥃

At 1.5 years old, Wh***ey is at such a fun stage. I’ve been thinking about different things we can work on with him while still being very mindful that he’s a baby and he’s still growing. I’ve lunged him a handful of times in the round pen, but I’m intentionally not doing a lot of physical work with him right now. Instead, I’m focusing on experiences that keep his brain learning without putting unnecessary stress on his growing body.

For his yearling stage, I really embraced letting him live outside, be a horse, and learn from the other horses. Now we’re slowly adding in some life skills—and trailer loading is a big one. Not only is it useful training, but being comfortable getting on a trailer is an important safety skill for any horse.

I’ve been working with Bella on self-loading, so I figured Wh***ey could watch and learn from the process. Yesterday, I decided to give him a chance to try it himself.

And this kid walked right onto the trailer like he had done it a hundred times. 🤎 He stood quietly, backed right off when asked, and was completely engaged and interested in what we were doing. He even seemed to really enjoy himself!

There may have been a lot of cookies involved. 😂 Normally, Wh***ey doesn’t get treats, but this was a special learning experience—and apparently he discovered pretty quickly that cookies are VERY exciting. He started getting a little pushy, which was a great reminder of exactly why I don’t normally hand out treats. 😂

But overall? He was absolutely flawless.

I’m so proud of this baby. He has such a wonderful combination of a great brain, curiosity, and athleticism, and I’m really excited to see what he grows into.

For now, we’ll keep letting him be a baby, giving him positive experiences, and building the foundation for the horse he’ll become. 🤎🐴

🐴 Tuesday morning = back to work for Bella!

After a busy weekend — the fair Saturday and Pipestave Sunday for two dressage tests — we’re back to work and putting together our game plan for Groton House this Sunday.

Yesterday was an easy lunge and lots of turnout after limited turnout over the weekend. Going into Pipestave, I had a feeling she might be a little stiff between the weather, losing a shoe/ riding day last week, and limited turnout Saturday. Saturday was great exposure, but definitely not much movement!

Our Training 1 score was the same 66% we received at Bradford, although the test itself wasn’t quite as good. Some little mistakes, and the canter felt stiff. I think she needed more warm-up, especially more canter work. Two weeks ago at our clinic and Bradford, this test felt much better and we scored 72%+ and 66%+.

We also rode Training 2 for the first time, with Bonnie reading the test just to keep it light and fun. By then Bella actually felt much looser and more warmed up. I used to ride this test a lot in college, so now I just need to relearn it! 😂

Today’s plan was side reins, transitions and a focused lunge… but Bella had other ideas. 😂 She was WILD, including rearing so high I thought she was going over backwards. Definitely a reminder to always be careful and tactful with side reins!

We kept things simple with a small circle and lots of walk/trot transitions to get her focused. Hoping to get some canter conditioning in later today.

This week = transitions, canter work and strength as we work on our canter-to-trot transitions, keeping her loose, and starting to think toward First Level next year.

And the BEST part of the weekend? ❤️ Bella self-loaded every single time! That makes getting out on our own SO much easier.

Hoping for Pipestave Thursday for some hills and conditioning if the weather cooperates. 🤞🏻

Now we just need to convince Bella that winter is NOT an excuse to audition for the bucking team. 😂

🐴🌻🐔 So many impressive submissions this year from Langwater Barnyard Buddies 4-H! 🌾

We had such a fun time at the horse show on Saturday, and it was so exciting to see the incredible variety of entries from our 4-H members and our community!

From well-behaved ponies 🐴 to mixed-media projects, stained glass, photography, flowers (including some beautiful flowers in a teacup!), vegetables, and of course… our scarecrow, which took 1st place! 🥇🐦‍⬛

Thank you to everyone who came out to watch, support our kids, and celebrate all of their hard work. It’s always so much fun seeing the creativity, interests, and talents that come through in the variety of entries each year.

So proud of all of our Langwater Barnyard Buddies 4-H members! ❤️🌾
