Your dog called. They’d like a JOB, please 😂🐕
We sat down with Dane, lead trainer at thedogwizardstcharles , to talk about giving dogs jobs that tap into what they were genetically built to do.
Here’s your Part 1 cheat sheet 👇
👀 Sighthounds: Greyhounds, Whippets, Borzois + friends are VERY movement-oriented. Think agility-style activities, recall training + anything that gets them moving and tuned into you.
👃 Scent hounds: Let that nose clock in. Try “find it” games, tossing treats into the yard to sniff out, finding a favorite toy + other scent-based activities.
🐀 Terriers: Tenacious is basically in the job description. Tug, retrieving, scent work + other activities that give that prey drive and determination somewhere productive to go.
🛡️ Guard dogs: This is a BIG umbrella, but the goal is giving them something to do when they’re unsure about a person or situation. Teaching them to check in with their human can help take the pressure off feeling like they need to handle the situation themselves.
The big takeaway? Breed gives us clues about what may feel naturally rewarding to our dogs. Giving those instincts an appropriate outlet can help create a more balanced, fulfilled pup.
And obviously, every dog is an individual, so this is a starting point, not a rulebook.
