Congratulations to all the Australian Terrier competitors at Montgomery this weekend. Even if you didn’t get the ribbon you were hoping for, you all had lovely competitive dogs. I was proud to share the ring with you.

Collar position, as well as where the lead attaches to the collar can affect how the dog gaits in the show ring.

I recently worked with a dog whose movement had a great deal of lift and bounce, more so than is desirable. I suggested the handler switch the collar so the clip was positioned underneath the neck rather than coming up from the top. The change was immediate. The difference in collar position immediately changed the dog's movement for the better.

Don't be afraid to experiment with equipment and position. Do not experiment in the show ring, experiment at home, in training sessions without distractions and if you decide you want to make a change train your dog to be comfortable with the adjustment.
