When addressing resource guarding, it is crucial to adopt an approach that does not involve removing a puppy's food. Some videos have demonstrated people taking away their puppy's food and playing with it to desensitize them to others interfering with their meals. However, this method can inadvertently create resource guarding behaviors that were not previously present. If our intention is to prevent food guarding, our strategy should be the opposite of taking their food away. When approaching their bowl, it should only be to add something desirable. This will encourage them to welcome our approach. Then, if it becomes necessary to take their bowl, for instance, if you forgot to add a topper, they will be more accepting because you consistently add to their food. Essentially, do not remove their food to teach them not to guard it. Puppies will tolerate it very well, but as soon as they reach maturity they will start making their protest known. Puppies from large litters may arrive already predisposed to resource guarding. This often occurs when breeders do not provide enough food, resulting in some puppies still being hungry after the food is gone. By understanding the causes of resource guarding, we can implement strategies to prevent it.
