Veronica & Corduroy’s Route 66 Cruisers are growing SO quickly! 🏁 Have you ever seen seven one week old puppies move so fast?!

There’s actually something really important happening in all that scooting around.

From birth, I’m intentional about making sure my puppies have good traction in the whelping box. At this age, they aren’t walking yet, but they are constantly pushing, pulling, crawling, and repositioning themselves to get to Mama and their littermates.

A surface with good grip gives those tiny paws something to push against instead of constantly slipping out from underneath them. Those little movements are helping them practice using their bodies, building strength and coordination as their muscles and joints develop.

It may look like seven tiny Route 66 Cruisers drag racing across the whelping box 😂 but purposeful footing is one of those small details that matters during these first weeks of development.

And apparently this crew has decided the speed limit does NOT apply in Whelping Wonderland. 🏎️💨

Pocket and I are working through a little bit of our homework every day! This entire session was only about eight minutes long. She was definitely highly distracted today, so we simply went at her pace. No pressure, no big deal. A few focused minutes still count! 🐾

I really enjoyed our first Manners 1 class today! 🐾

It actually made me realize how many of the basics have become second nature after owning and training multiple dogs over the years. There are so many little things I do without even thinking about them anymore.

One thing I really appreciated was that our trainer recognized that everyone has their own training style. For example, I rely on hand signals a lot, often without realizing it. I also don’t use every cue that’s commonly taught. I don’t teach “stay.” Instead, I teach a position like sit or down, and that position lasts until I release it with “free.” To me, “stay” would imply a separate behavior, when really I’m just asking Pocket to maintain the position until I tell her she’s finished.

That’s one of the things I love about dog training. The principles stay the same, but there are often several ways to communicate the same idea. I’m excited to keep building on Pocket’s foundation while also picking up new ideas along the way. 🤎🍄🐾

Back to school for Pocket! 📚🐾

We’re starting Manners 1 at What A Great Dog! today. While many of these skills are things we’ve already worked on at home, it’s always good to brush up in a new environment with new distractions.

Because a dog who listens in your living room is one thing. A dog who listens around other dogs and people? That’s where the real learning happens.

I always tell my puppy families that training isn’t about having a “bad” dog. It’s about giving a good dog the skills to navigate our human world.

Today is Pocket’s first Manners 1 class at What A Great Dog! She seems… cautiously optimistic. (Or completely dissociated. Jury’s still out.) 😂

They say the days are long, but the weeks? They disappear.

Somehow, these little Route 66 Cruisers are already one week old.

This is my kids’ favorite milestone because it’s finally time to climb into the whelping box for puppy snuggles. Before this, the puppies are just so tiny and fragile that we mostly admire them from the sidelines while mama does what she does best.

Now the fun begins. More cuddles. More little squeaks. More personalities starting to peek through. And somehow, another reminder that puppyhood never lasts quite long enough. 🤎
