Make Your Reptile Lighting Safer and Last Longer 🦎💡
By Todd Goode, President, LightYourReptiles.com / LYR Inc. Hot summer months can cause lighting to overheat.
I often get reports about T5 and LED light fixtures failing in reptile enclosures — so I want to share an important issue I’ve noticed over the years that might help prevent this problem for you.
What’s happening?
Many keepers mount lights inside closed or solid-top cages with low levels of ventilation — especially near high-wattage heat bulbs or heat panels.
The result?
Heat builds up at the top of the enclosure — just like hot air trapped in a house attic on a summer day. Temperatures can spike to 120–130°F (48–54°C) or more.
This creates a hot pocket right around your light fixtures — causing extreme heat buildup inside them.🔥
Why does this matter?
Electronics hate heat.
This intense heat causes the ballasts or LED drivers inside your lights to fail or age prematurely — sometimes in just days, but usually over weeks or months.
You might notice your lights flickering or turning off on their own — that’s the fixture’s thermal safety trying to protect itself.
This isn’t a product defect or warranty issue.
High-quality fixtures are designed to handle heat, but not this extreme.
What’s the solution?
✅ Improve ventilation near the top of your cages.
✅ Cut vent holes or add mesh above the lights for airflow.
✅ Use a thermometer or infrared temp gun to monitor temperatures near your lights.
✅ Whenever possible, mount lights outside the cage — on or over screen tops for longest life.
✅ Keep heat bulbs at a reasonable distance from your light fixtures.
A quick note about fans:
Adding fans to cool lights can create drafts that stress your reptiles and cause respiratory issues. Use caution if you choose to add airflow devices.
I hope this helps you keep your reptiles safer and your lighting equipment lasting longer! If you have questions or want personalized advice, feel free to reach out anytime.
