Meet the GIHS Pets of the Week, Akio and Annie!

🐱 Akio is a handsome 2-year-old with a beautiful, fluffy white and tabby coat. Picked up as a stray, this sweet boy has quickly shown us just how affectionate and loving he can be. Akio is happiest soaking up attention and would love to trade shelter life for a cozy home and a family of his own.

Akio is neutered, vaccinated, FIV & FeLV negative, and ready to meet you!

🐶 If happiness had four legs, it would look a lot like 11-month-old Annie! She lives for the simple joys in life: rolling around in the grass, chasing after her favorite ball, and cooling off with a splash in the pool. In fact, she's so dedicated to her ball game that she'll toss it into the air herself just to keep the fun going! She's playful, cheerful, and always ready to make the most of her day. Whether she's entertaining herself with a toy, soaking up the sunshine, or showing off her silly side, this girl has a way of bringing smiles wherever she goes.

We've had some new arrivals to PetSmart!

Meet Rob and Dapper Mr. Bones!

🐱Rob (orange) is three months old and described as playful, curious, affectionate, and would do wonderfully in an active household!

🐱 Dapper Mr. Bones (tabby) is 4 months old and described as good with kids and other cats, playful, affectionate, and perfect for an active household.

You can visit them and other adoptable cats/kittens at the PetSmart Adoption Center located at 6102 Broadway. Adoptions can be completed from PetSmart, allowing you to take your new companion home with you! Just be sure to stop by the shelter to pick up our adoption packet!

We're in need of at least two volunteers for the Run in Texas Sand Crab Run this evening from 8pm to 10:30pm. We will be handing out waters to participants at two checkpoint locations. One on the beach just west of Galvestonian Condos, and the other at the border between Porretto and Stewart beaches.

If able, please message us. Our volunteer coordinator is unable to check her email at this time.

This Foster Friday we're giving a lil love to Lil Girl!

Lil Girl is a 4-year-old Shepherd mix who’s pretty much a professional at taking it easy.

While the scars on her body speak to one story, her disposition speaks to another; that of a dog who still wishes (and hopes) to see the best in humanity, and who wishes to offer them the best in return.

Despite what led her here, Lil Girl is one of the sweetest pets we've had pass through our doors. She's calm, laid-back, housetrained, and happiest taking it easy with the people she loves.

She can be a little shy and anxious when meeting someone new, but give her a little time and you’ll see what she really wants: love, affection, and someone she can feel safe with.

This week, we’re checking in with AJ (now Cooper), Bruce, Kabob (Mr. Bobinsky), and Ziti (Miss Luna) to see how life after adoption is treating them. Spoiler alert: we think they’re doing pretty well.

August has officially come to a close, and we're celebrating another incredible Clear the Shelters campaign!

Over the course of the month, our community showed up for shelter pets in a BIG way. Together, we saw:

🐶 58 dogs adopted
🐱 49 cats adopted
🚐 16 dogs transferred to rescue partners
🚐 44 cats transferred to rescue partners

That’s 167 animals who left our care and took the next step toward a brighter future. ❤️

Whether they headed home with a new family or continued their journey with one of our trusted rescue partners, every one of those empty kennels represents an opportunity not only for the pet who left it, but for the next animal who needs us.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who adopted, shared our posts, donated, fostered, volunteered, or simply helped spread the word throughout Clear the Shelters. And, of course, thank you to our staff and rescue partners who worked behind the scenes to make every one of these outcomes possible.

Clear the Shelters may be over, but the work continues, and there are still plenty of wonderful pets waiting for their turn.

If your ideal best friend comes with big paws and big smiles, we've got some dogs for you. 😂

We’ve got some seriously lovable big and medium dogs waiting at GIHS, the kind who make excellent adventure buddies, couch companions, and walking partners!

Sure, they might take up a little more room on the couch. They might eat a few more kibbles. And yes, you may occasionally find yourself asking, “Do you really need to sit ON me?”

But when it comes to the good stuff like loyalty, laughs, companionship, and love, sometimes bigger really is better.
