Just a few points about owning a German Shepherd Dog or GSD. The German Shepherd was originally bred for herding and dog was added to differentiate between the dog and the man. For those of you that have or have had a GSD you already know what I am talking about, but for those considering getting one these facts may be helpful.
There are 2 types of shepherds the working line and the show line. I know absolutely nothing about show lines and don't consider myself an expert on working lines.I am speaking to the working lines.
First off a GSD is a very high energy dog. They are the happiest working and need a job. A large fenced yard is almost a necessity. They require a lot of exercise or they will become bored and entertain themselves which you don't want because they can be destructive.
Socializing is very important. I take mine to the local Tractor Supply. Socialization will help them not be aggressive when they are scared
Brushing them is a nearly daily chore. They are notorious shedders, You can build another dog with the hair you get off of them. They have beautiful coats. My favorite are solid black, bi color and sable.
GSDs are very loyal dogs. They are beautiful dogs but do need different care than a small dog or even other large dogs. One thing is for sure you will never go to the bathroom alone again.
The main thing to remember when considering getting one is the high energy level they have and the attention that is required to keep them the happy, healthy dog you want
