Dr Wielgus asked us to pass along the below note to all of her clients. We wish her the best in her future endeavors.

To the Pets and People I Have Loved;

Sometimes our greatest blessings come from places we least expect. When I graduated veterinary school, I was certain I wanted to go into academia, but I was tired and thought I would give general practice a go. What a surprise to look back eight years later on all the joy private practice has brought me. This community has influenced so much of the way I practice medicine and will continue to practice medicine for years to come. Of course, it is often when we get most comfortable that change weasels its way in. Commuting is a challenge and one of my trade-offs was time spent with my kids, and the time has come to prioritize spending more time with my family. I will miss everyone - all the pups and kittens and their people too. This community has blessed me beyond measure and will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for the beautiful well wishes on our page as well as the cards and gifts. You have all made me feel so loved.

Thank you for 8 wonderful years,

Dr Kayla Wielgus

Do you have a hyperthyroid cat? Meaning its thyroid is producing too much thyroid hormone. There are 4 primary ways to treat this now. Methimazole in the new liquid form shown below, methimazole tablets, prescription diets, and radioactive iodine 1-131 therapy. Cats afflicted with hyperthyroidism usually develop a variety of signs that may be subtle at first but become more severe as the disease progresses. The most common clinical signs of hyperthyroidism are weight loss, increased appetite, and increased thirst and urination. Hyperthyroidism may also cause vomiting, diarrhea, and hyperactivity. The coat of affected cats may appear unkempt, matted, or greasy. We carry 3 treatment options in house, and we are fortunate to have a specialty clinic close by in Nashville that now performs radioactive iodine treatments.

We are always watching and evaluating new products that might be able to help our patients. We have had Numelvi in stock for a little over a month, slowly trying it on some of our worst allergy patients. Initial results are very positive. Numelvi is the first and only second generation JAK1 inhibitor for itch and inflammation relief. It is 10x more selective then other JAK1 inhibitors at targeting the JAK1 enzyme which can result in better itch and inflammation control and less interference with other immune functions. If your pet is currently not well controlled on other itch products, please ask us if Numelvi might be a better fit for your pet during your next visit.

Dr Wielgus joined our team in July of 2018. If you are one of our clients, chances are she has helped you at some point. What many of you don't know is the Dr Wielgus has commuted from Bowling Green, Ky the entire time. Often having to drive an hour + each way, sometimes multiple times a day when it was her week to handle hospitalized pet duty. The time has unfortunately come for her to take a job closer to home so that she can have more family time. She has been a great asset to the pets in Gallatin and she will be missed. Her last day will be on May 8th. We are incredibly grateful that we got to work with her the last 8 years. Please help us wish Dr Wielgus the best on the next stop in her career

With the time change many of us are now letting our pets out in the morning to go potty in the dark. We are in the middle of coyote mating season which makes them more active and territorial. If you live in an area with coyotes, please exercise caution when letting your pets out in the dark. We see pets that were attacked by coyotes every year in March.

We are hoping to be open tomorrow from 10-4 to try to get any clients in urgent need in. This will depend on if some power lines blocking our way in are repaired and if enough support staff can make it in. We will update if things change. If you have an early AM appointment tomorrow we have already texted you about rescheduling. We will be in touch as soon as we are back open to get you rescheduled.

Everyone please be safe and stay warm.
