Late February is actually the most important time to keep your bird feeders full — here's why.
By now, most natural food sources (berries, seeds, insects) are gone. The birds that stuck around all winter are burning through their fat reserves just to stay warm overnight. A well-stocked feeder can literally be the difference between making it to spring and not.
A few tips from our team:
🌻 Black oil sunflower seed is the MVP — almost every backyard bird eats it, and the high fat content is exactly what they need right now.
🥜 Suet cakes are a game changer in cold weather. Woodpeckers, nuthatches, and chickadees go crazy for them. The peanut and high-energy varieties give birds the most calories per bite.
💧 Don't forget water. Birds need fresh water even in winter, and most natural sources are frozen. A shallow dish refreshed daily makes your yard the best stop on the block.
🧹 Clean your feeders. Wet, old seed can grow mold that makes birds sick. Dump, scrub, and refill every couple weeks.
