🐾 Every Day Is International Dog Day at VSC Gaithersburg! 🐾

Man’s best friend is always celebrated and cherished here. Dogs come in all sizes, colors, shapes, and breeds. They serve many different roles and possess countless unique talents. The one thing they all share is the unconditional love they carry in their hearts.

International Dog Day was founded in 2004 by an animal welfare advocate to raise awareness about shelter dogs, promote adoption, and celebrate both working dogs and beloved family pets.
Today, and every day, we celebrate the incredible dogs who enrich our lives in so many ways. ❤️🐶

Cory, fondly referred to as Cosmo by his parents, is a sweet and adorable 2yr old cat that came to see Dr. Galemore, our internal medicine specialist, due to chronic nasal disease. He underwent a head CT scan, rhinoscopy, nasal biopsies, and nasal deep tissue culture, which revealed severe bacterial infection and chronic rhinitis (inflammation in the nasal tissues). In addition, we identified that Cory had significant narrowing in his nasopharynx and there was no communication between his nasal cavity and nasopharynx. He had bone obstructing the region, a condition called complete osseus choanal atresia. Before attempting any intervention for his respiratory obstruction, we focused on controlling his severe infection and inflammatory disease.

To develop a plan of action to address the bony obstruction in his upper airway, Dr. Galemore collaborated with the surgery teams at both the Gaithersburg and Leesburg surgery teams. Cory’s procedure was performed by Drs. Taylor, Wong, and Galemore with the assistance of Drs. McChesney and Goodale. The team was able to take a minimally invasive approach to create a new communication between the nasopharynx and nasal cavity to allow Cory to breathe through his nose for the first time in his life! A temporary nasopharyngeal stent was placed to prevent the new opening from closing down due to scar tissue formation during the healing process. This stent will be removed in a few weeks. The morning after surgery, Cory was in great spirits, purring, eating, and requesting belly rubs.

A huge thank you to all the team members that participated in this case and allowed us to help this sweet little man!

It wasn’t me…😇🌽!!!
Nimbus was presented to his primary veterinarian, Muddy Branch Veterinary Center, after vomiting multiple times during the day. Muddy Branch did a wonderful job working him up and found non-obstructive foreign material in his small intestine. Nimbus was sent over for our team to care for him overnight, with IV fluids and anti-nausea medications. Nimbus’ abdominal ultrasound the following morning showed the material had reach the colon, but needed a little help to make its way out - a little l**e and saline did the trick! Nimbus was quickly feeling much better and was able to go home later the same day. No cutting was necessary!
