House with a Heart Senior Pet Sanctuary

House with a Heart Senior Pet Sanctuary We provide a loving home for unwanted senior pets and give medical grants to assist in pulling/adopting seniors out of shelters ❤️
(319)

In 2006, Sher Polvinale and her late husband, Joe, created a senior pet sanctuary in their home in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Sanctuary residents are senior and special needs dogs and cats who have lost their families and homes through no fault of their own. Because of their advanced age and various medical conditions, they have little chance of being adopted. The Sanctuary’s mission is to provide a

helping hand for senior pets, so they can live their best lives. In addition to top-notch “room and board,” all our residents receive abundant, unconditional love and affection. Those who arrive at the Sanctuary with health problems immediately get the care they need, such as diagnostic screenings, dental work, medication, and surgery. The Sanctuary offers residents* a life well worth living. They have a safe, roomy, comfortable, bright, and spotless home environment. On our two-acre property, they play in secure outdoor yards and spend supervised time in fenced, grassy fields. We provide ongoing health care and wellness screening, consulting veterinary specialists as needed. Residents are fed high-quality foods/treats and receive special diets as required.

*Our current residents are all members of the “pup pack.” But over the years, we have welcomed countless dogs AND cats, and we continue a variety of efforts to support all pets who need a helping hand. For example:

Our K-9 & Kitty Medical Miracles Grants program supports our Rescue Partners who pull senior and special needs dogs and cats either from a shelter or owner give up. We provide a grant to help pay for medical care they need to make them adoptable and help them find their new forever home. Feed Fido & Fluffy is our HWAH Pet Pantry. With donations from our supporters, we purchase food and supplies for pets in need. HWAH relies on volunteers, donations, grants, and wish-list gifts to accomplish our primary mission of providing a helping hand for senior dogs and cats in need. We are always looking for ways to “pay it forward” on their behalf. We reserve the right to delete comments, posts or photographs that are:

❤️House with a Heart’s Legacy of Love: When to Say Goodbye ❤️

(This is a rather long video but we strongly encourage that you listen to Sher’s beautifully-put point of view until the very end so that you can possibly obtain a fresh perspective on caring for your senior/soon to be senior pet)

As you can imagine, all of us at House with a Heart have had to confront and cope with a lot of emotions, particularly grief, when the time approaches for our seniors to cross the rainbow bridge. Over the years, we have learned that when debating on whether it is the right time to help a pet cross over, we need to focus on the quality of life of the pet and not base the decision on whether we want more time with them.

In 2019, our Emily produced this video with Sher on the difficult but necessary subject of when it is the right time to say goodbye to your beloved pet. If you are currently facing this dilemma- this video might give you some insight on when in your pets life you should make this decision.

FEEL GOOD FRIDAY: A homeless veteran surrendered his beloved pet dog at a fire station in Texas with a note that read, "Please help my baby." Now, thanks to the help and kindness of the fire department and partner organizations, the man and his dog both have new homes.

🌟This is a courtesy post for our friends at Miri's Haven Senior Dog Rescue🌟

👑 Meet Violet: part Beagle, part royalty, 100% sweetheart. 👑

At approximately 12 years young, Violet knows exactly what she likes: soft beds, fluffy blankets, and plenty of time to roll around in them like the queen she is. 💜

This gentle girl is mostly house trained when kept on a regular schedule, rides great in the car, and is perfectly content relaxing at home on her own. Her favorite things? Sniffing every interesting scent she can find, soaking up pets and attention, and enjoying all the cozy comforts life has to offer.

Violet would love a home with a fenced yard where her Beagle nose can stay busy. A home without stairs would be ideal—or a devoted human willing to provide royal transportation up and down the steps. 🚕🐾

Violet has one eye and is blind in that eye due to glaucoma, so she needs daily eye drops. She has also experienced chronic ear infections that have left her fairly deaf. But don't let that fool you—her heart is full, her spirit is sweet, and her nose is still working overtime!

If you're looking for a loving, low-key companion with plenty of personality and endless affection to give, Violet may be your perfect match. 🐶💕

🧡Reese🧡

Reese is just the sweetest little guy! He’s very gentle and gets along great with the other dogs.

For being 14 years old, he has quite a bit of s***k and really seems more youthful than his age suggests.

Although he is mostly blind, he quickly learned his way around his foster house and confidently uses the doggie door, goes down the deck steps into the yard, and comes right back in on his own.

Reese loves attention and would happily sit next to you on the couch all day long. He would do best with someone who is retired, works from home, or is home most of the time so he can enjoy the companionship he loves.

If you live in the DC metro area and would like more information or to apply, visit our rescue partner Healing Hearts Animal Rescue Group at hharg.rescuegroups.org.
