As I’m sure we all know, hurricane season started last week. Jim Cantore and our amateur weather professionals, adoptables Sweet Potato and Alto (they got their qualifications from watching a lot of storm chasing videos and assure us that they’re legit, and we have no reason not to believe them in the face of that kind of evidence!) have a message for Alachua County residents.

As these three checked through our inventory to prep for the season, they realized that the shelter has a clear emergency response need: CRATES! Particularly 36’ and 42’ wire crates, vital for ongoing emergency response and activation as well as general operations in the event of large scale foster activation. If you have a few gently used crates sitting around gathering dust, or even have a crate or two you borrowed from ACAR that you haven’t had a chance to bring back (no judgement; we’ve all been there!) now’s the time to swing it by and drop them off at the shelter during open hours!

Now is also a fabulous time to check your pet emergency kits! Make sure to review our ‘Disaster Preparation’ section on the ACAR website for tips and tricks.

🚨Make sure your pet is microchipped and the information is up to date- remember you can come by ACAR for a $20 microchip on most weekday afternoons we are open to the public. Call 352-264-6870 for more information on hours and how to schedule this (and other!) low cost services.

Kittens in need of foster placement! These babies are all eating at least slurry, so are not bottle kittens, but need TLC to become big and strong. This is Troy Bolton, and he needs your help.

Troy is a 2yo, 50lb neutered male terrier mix. He has big radar dish ears, perfect eyeliner, and the cutest little black spots.

Outside of a kennel, Troy is sweet, calm, and a little timid of new things. He sits nicely for a treat, is happy to hop into a vehicle for a ride, and walks well on a leash offsite. In shelter playgroups, Troy enjoys mingling with other puppy pals, both male and female, but is more of a cruiser than a player- he is happy to wander the yard and say hi, but most enjoys hanging out with his people friends- he loves to jump in peoples’ laps, because he firmly believes that ‘lap dog’ is a lifestyle and not a size classification.

In the kennel…Troy spins, sometimes the point of self injury. Troy barks until he loses his voice. Troy presents with barrier frustration that can make removing him from his kennel daunting. Troy paces fence lines until he rubs his nose and lips raw. Even with extra time out of the kennel, medication to mitigate his shelter specific anxieties, time to play with other dog friends, additional in kennel enrichment and behavior modification- he is suffering.

A kennel isn’t a home environment; this situation is HARD on animals, some more than others. Sometimes it’s easy to forget how much it is to ask of a social species to live in a state of prolonged isolation and frustration; it can be harder still to understand the reality of that ask if you haven’t seen it. But our community is passionate, and service minded, and we want to be candid so we can work together to improve this dog’s quality of life.

We know Troy is a funny, sweet guy. We know he will be the perfect addition to the right person’s life. But this can’t be his reality 23 hours a day, every day. It’s not fair to him- which is where our community comes in. This is where you can help.

Troy is in need of an adopter, a long term foster to let him decompress outside of the shelter environment for 3+ weeks, or a 501c3 rescue organization interested in transferring him into their care.

Please share this post with anyone who can give this handsome guy a break. We provide all necessary supplies for foster parents. Troy’s best fit while he decompresses would likely be a quiet, predictable home that has the ability to let him interact with people and animals at his pace- the shelter environment is asking a lot of him, and a situation that is calm and allows him to interact on his terms and his timeframe, at least initially, will likely go a long way towards setting him up for success.
