CODE BLUE…. or should we say CODE BOO? 👻

Our techs had their hands full getting Andy ready for his annual appearance. After a little surgery, some reassembly, and a quick ECG check… well, let’s just say his heart rhythm was a little flat..

Andy is back and ready for another spooky season! 💀

He’ll be hanging around the clinic all October, so keep your eyes peeled for our favorite skeleton. You never know where he’ll show up next! 👀

🌧️🐾 WHEN THE WEATHER GETS RUFF, MAKE SURE YOUR PETS ARE READY! 🐾🌧️

Hurricane and storm season is here, and a little preparation now can make a BIG difference when severe weather hits. 🌪️

Before the next storm, make sure your pets are prepared too:

-Stock up on essentials: Have at least several days’ worth of food, fresh water, medications, treats, and any other necessities your pet may need. Don’t forget a few favorite toys or comfort items to help keep them calm!

-Stay up to date: Make sure vaccines and preventatives are current. If you need medications or preventatives refilled, don’t wait until a storm is approaching!

-Keep records handy: Have a copy of your pet’s medical and vaccine records somewhere safe and easily accessible.

-Make sure they can be identified: Check that ID tags are current and your pet’s microchip information is up to date. Remember, a microchip only works if your contact information is current!

-Have a plan: Know where you can take your pets if you need to evacuate, and never leave them behind if you have to leave your home.

A little preparation can help keep your whole family, including the four-legged members, safe when the weather gets ruff!🐾

Sometimes healing looks a little like this. 🐾

Sweet Elly recently visited us for a cystotomy, where seven bladder stones of varying sizes were surgically removed. Swipe to see her radiograph, you can clearly see just how many stones were hiding in her bladder!

Bladder stones can cause pain, blood in the urine, frequent urination, infections, accidents in the house, and in some cases, life-threatening urinary blockages. Depending on the type, some stones can be managed medically, while others require surgery to safely remove them.

During recovery, Elly was happiest snuggled up close with Maggie while our team kept a careful eye on her. Every patient recovers a little differently, and we tailor our care to each pet’s individual needs to help them recover as comfortably and safely as possible.

We’re so happy to see sweet Elly on the mend and wish her a smooth recovery! 💜

Meet Dr. Kathy Vliet!

We’re so excited to have Dr. Kathy Vliet join our team as a part-time veterinarian at The Veterinary Center at Hunter’s Crossing. With more than 30 years of experience in veterinary medicine, she brings a wealth of knowledge, compassion, and dedication to every patient she cares for.

Dr. Vliet has had the privilege of caring for pets and their families for more than 30 years, and she still truly loves what she does. After graduating from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995, she completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City before returning to Gainesville to begin her career.

Over the years, Dr. Vliet has practiced at Suburban Animal Hospital, owned Jonesville Animal Hospital for 20 years, worked with Tobias Veterinary Service, and now enjoys seeing patients part-time at The Veterinary Center at Hunter’s Crossing.

She continues practicing because she believes caring for the pets that mean so much to their families is one of the best ways she can give back to her community. She loves meeting new people and helping keep their beloved companions healthy and happy.

Outside of work, Dr. Vliet has ridden horses most of her life and enjoys trail riding whenever she can. One of the highlights of her career was serving as a veterinarian for three Iditarod Sled Dog Races, helping care for the amazing canine athletes along the trail. Before veterinary school, she also worked as a guide in the Galápagos Islands. Her husband recently retired from the University of Florida, where he was a biology professor and alligator biologist.

Dr. Vliet feels incredibly grateful to still be able to do the work she loves, and she looks forward to meeting you and caring for your pets!

🐾 BIG NEWS AT THE VETERINARY CENTER! 🐾

We’re excited to share that The Veterinary Center at Hunter’s Crossing now offers Endoscopy services!

Meet Winnie, a sweet hound who found herself in a little trouble after swallowing a bottle cap. 😳 Thankfully, using our gastroscope, our veterinary team was able to locate and successfully remove the bottle cap from Winnie’s stomach without the need for traditional abdominal surgery!

Endoscopy uses a small camera and specialized instruments that are passed through a natural opening (such as the mouth) meaning no surgical incision is needed. It’s an excellent option for removing certain swallowed foreign objects, like Winnie’s bottle cap, helping some pets avoid traditional abdominal surgery. In addition to foreign body retrieval, our endoscopes can also be used to closely examine areas such as the esophagus, stomach, upper intestinal tract, and airways to help diagnose a variety of conditions. For the right patients, these minimally invasive procedures can mean less discomfort and a faster recovery.

While not every swallowed object or gastrointestinal condition can be treated with endoscopy, having this technology gives our doctors another valuable option when determining the best treatment plan for your pet.
