🛣️ HIGHWAY WEDNESDAY — Watching a project take shape

Last week we shared the female we purchased in Orlando in 2017 that started the Highway project here at Epimorphs.

Today, we’re moving the story forward.

These are Boaz and Toothless in 2018, during the early years of our work with these animals.

At that point, we were beginning to see something different.

The distinctive dorsal expression, the contrast, the dark base, and the overall look weren’t simply disappearing as the animals developed. We were seeing characteristics that continued to show themselves as the project moved forward.

That is what makes a long-term breeding project so rewarding.

You don’t just get to watch an individual animal develop.

You get to watch traits move through generations.

What started with one very unusual female in 2017 became something we have now been working with for nearly a decade—and there is still a lot more of the Highway story to share.

Meet Sheba. 🛣️🦎

Sheba is one of our future Highway breeders here at Epimorphs Geckos, and she’s a girl we’re very excited to watch continue to grow and develop.

As we work with Highway, we’re always paying close attention to the traits that make these animals stand out—overall look, pattern, contrast, structure, and how they continue to develop with time. Sheba is one of those animals that has really caught our attention, and she has earned her place as part of our future breeding plans.

One of the best parts of this project is raising up young Highway animals and imagining what they may contribute to the next generation. That’s a big part of what makes holdbacks so exciting—seeing potential now, and then watching that potential turn into something even better with age.

For now, Sheba’s job is simple:

Grow. Develop. And be part of the future of our Highway project.

She’s not available—she’s staying right here with us. 😁

Where our Highway story began. 🛣️

In 2017, at a reptile expo in Orlando, we purchased this female from The Gourmet Rodent.

There was just something about her.

Her dark base, the bold cream running down her dorsal, and her overall appearance were unlike the other crested geckos we were used to seeing at the time. She was unique enough that we knew we wanted to work with her and see what she could produce.

At the time, we had no idea where that decision would eventually lead.

This is the female that started the Highway project here at Epimorphs.

What began with one unusual gecko purchased at a reptile show became a breeding project we would continue developing, studying and refining for years.

Over the next several weeks, we’re going to start sharing more of that history—the early pairings, the first offspring, what we began noticing, and how the Epimorphs Highway project developed into what it is today.

There are a lot of beautiful geckos in our collection, but some animals are more than that.

Some are part of the history of the program.

And for Epimorphs, it started with her.
