You’re not “just a dog trainer” if...🤔

You know that lasting behaviour change doesn’t happen at just one end of the lead. 🐶💕 A brilliant training plan can only go so far if the owner feels confused, overwhelmed or unsure how to put it into practice. 🙌 That’s why supporting the human matters just as much. 🧠✨ Sometimes the biggest breakthrough comes from helping an owner understand what their dog is communicating, giving them a plan that feels realistic, or building their confidence enough to keep going when things feel hard. When you help an owner feel capable and informed, incredible transformations can happen! 💚

Are you ready to turn your passion for dogs into personalised behaviour plans, easy-to-follow strategies and countless transformations? Enrolment for our October 2026 cohort is NOW OPEN 👉 Link in b!o.

I’M NOT STUBBORN!

Your dog won’t come back when called, refuses to walk in the direction you want to go, won’t sit when asked, doesn’t listen when out and about, but does it perfectly at home…

Are they just being stubborn?

What we may think of as just being stubborn is often an important clue that tells us we need to look deeper into the cause.

A dog’s response is influenced by far more than motivation. Emotional state, physical discomfort, stress, tiredness, an environment, previous experiences, genetics and learning history can all play a part.

Perhaps dogs don’t understand what we’re asking. Maybe an environment is far more rewarding than we are. Maybe they are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, overexcited or tired. Maybe they've learned that responding to a particular cue predicts something they find unpleasant. Perhaps there is pain, discomfort or they’re not feeling well.

Are we making it worthwhile, have we taught the behaviour clearly and practised in different environments, is the environment too challenging, are we asking more than the dog can manage in that moment, is there an unmet need or an underlying physical issue?

These are far more important questions than asking how to make a dog comply.

Our responsibility isn't to win a battle of wills. It's to understand the dog in front of us, in that moment and create the conditions in which they can succeed.

Build motivation through what is reinforcing to the individual dog. Make learning clear and consistent. Manage the environment. Respect emotions and physical limits.

A dog succeeds when they feel safe, understand what's being asked and are motivated.

Instead of labelling a dog as “stubborn”, first look at what might be underneath that behaviour.

Does your dog really need a walk today?

Before you clip on the leash, take a moment to ask yourself: Why are we going for a walk? Who is this walk for? Is it something you need today, or something your dog truly needs?

Walks can be wonderful, but they’re not the only way for a dog to get exercise and enrichment. Try a sniffari in the yard, a “Find It” game, a food puzzle, a short training session, gentle indoor play—or simply a chance to rest.

Sometimes a dog just doesn’t want to go. They may be tired, uncomfortable, worried about something outside, or even in pain. Pay attention to the dog in front of you. If their reluctance is new or keeps happening, it may be worth checking in with your veterinarian.

The best choice may look different from day to day. Listen to your dog, meet their needs, and let their well-being guide you. 🐾

Your dog is reading you all day long. Not your thoughts — your patterns.

Your breath. Your tension. Your pace. Your predictability. Even how you recover after stress. And that changes the conversation.

Because regulation isn't just something we do to our dogs. It's something that can happen between us. If you want to go deeper into understanding your dog's nervous system, I linked all of our courses in the comments ⬇️
