Your horse's Vitamin E might be fake, overpriced, or both.
Strong words. Here's exactly what they mean, and how to check your own bottle in about ten seconds.
Vitamin E runs muscle recovery, nerve function, and immune health. It's also the most misunderstood supplement in the barn, and the market quietly takes advantage of that two different ways.
PROBLEM #1: THE FAKE STUFF (the cheap shelf)
Synthetic Vitamin E is legal and it does something. But it is not the same as the natural kind:
• Natural (d-alpha-tocopherol) is a single form. Your horse's liver has a transport protein (alpha-TTP) that specifically grabs this form and holds onto it.
• Synthetic (dl-alpha-tocopherol) is a lab-made blend of eight forms. Only one is that natural form, and the body lets more of the rest pass through.
The tell is printed right on the label: if you see "dl," it's the lab version. And the cheapest products usually pile on more:
❌ Sugar and molasses as a carrier (bad news for metabolic, Cushing's, and laminitic horses)
❌ Wheat middlings and preservatives as filler
❌ Force-added selenium you can't dial back (a problem if your feed or region already provides it)
A lot of "Vitamin E" in that tier is mostly not Vitamin E.
PROBLEM #2: THE OVERPRICED STUFF (the premium shelf)
The premium natural liquids are the real thing, credit where it's due. But most are diluted to 250 to 500 IU per mL, so a real dose burns through a lot of bottle. Do the math on cost per unit of actual Vitamin E and you're paying up to 3 times more than you need to for the same natural d-alpha.
You shouldn't have to choose between "real" and "affordable."
THE MYTH UNDER ALL OF IT: "My horse gets enough from hay."
Vitamin E lives in green, growing grass, and starts breaking down the moment the grass is cut. After a few months in a bale, most of it is gone. Stalled horses, performance horses, broodmares, and hard keepers are the usual candidates for running short, and you can't see it until there's a problem.
WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS, in order:
1. Form: natural d-alpha, the form the body holds onto, not synthetic dl-alpha
2. Purity: no sugar, no filler, no forced selenium
3. Concentration: more Vitamin E per mL means a smaller dose and a lower cost per day
WHY WE BUILT VITALIT-E (the bottle that's neither fake nor overpriced):
✅ Natural d-alpha-tocopherol, the form your horse's body prefers
✅ 900 IU per mL, more concentrated than the premium liquids (which run 250 to 500)
✅ Zero sugar, fillers, dyes, or forced selenium. One ingredient.
✅ About 23¢ a day at a maintenance dose, cheaper per unit than the premium liquids and far cleaner than the cheap powders
Vitamin E isn't where you cut corners. Read the label on whatever you're feeding right now. If you see "dl," added sugar, a selenium you didn't choose, or a concentration so low you're paying triple, you already know what to do.
Vitalit-E. Natural Vitamin E. The Very Best.
