We had so many new followers when our last litter was on the ground that we wanted to give an overview to help those of you who are new to our programβ¦
πΎ Welcome to MarvelMAS! πΎ
We are MarvelMAS, owners, breeders, and lovers of Miniature American Shepherds, located on a 13-acre property in North Florida, just outside Gainesville.
Our dogs are an integral part of our family, and we are passionate about breeding healthy, structurally sound, versatile, and well-adjusted Miniature American Shepherds. We believe that responsible breeding involves much more than carefully selecting a sire and dam. It requires a commitment to health, temperament, early development, and finding the right home for every puppy we raise.
We are actively involved in both conformation showing and performance sports, and our breeding philosophy reflects our appreciation for the breed's intelligence, athleticism, versatility, and willingness to work. Our aim is to produce well-rounded dogs that combine sound structure, stable temperaments, and natural working ability, whether their future lies in the show ring, performance sports, or as much-loved family companions.
It is the thought, planning, and dedication behind our breeding and puppy-rearing program that we believe makes the greatest difference.
We are frequently asked about how we raise our puppies and how we select their future families. So, we thought we would share a little more about the MarvelMAS approach, from our breeding decisions and early puppy development to our individual evaluations and placement process.
πΎ Raising Our Puppies:
Bringing a litter of puppies into the world is about so much more than producing beautiful dogs. As breeders, we believe our responsibility begins long before a puppy is born and continues well beyond the day they leave for their new homes.
We are passionate about producing healthy, structurally sound, confident, and well-adjusted Miniature American Shepherds. Every decision we make, from selecting breeding pairs to matching puppies with their future families, is guided by that commitment.
Our puppies are raised in the heart of our home, where they experience the everyday sights, sounds, and activities of family life from their earliest weeks. As they grow, their world gradually expands beyond the whelping room, with opportunities to explore the outdoors from the safety of our 13-acre property. They also experience the world through carefully planned outings, including car rides and bike rides, allowing them to encounter new sights, sounds, and environments in a safe, positive, and age-appropriate manner.
𧬠It Starts with Health Testing:
All our breeding dogs undergo comprehensive health testing before being considered for our breeding program. This includes:
- Hip evaluations
- Elbow evaluations
- Patella evaluations
- Eye evaluations
- Lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV) screening
- Comprehensive DNA testing for relevant inherited conditions
Health testing is about making informed breeding decisions, understanding potential risks, and working toward healthier future generations. DNA testing alone is not sufficient, which is why we also place considerable importance on physical and orthopedic evaluations.
πΆ Puppy Raising:
We are both Avidog and Puppy Culture breeders, incorporating structured, developmentally appropriate enrichment throughout our puppies' early lives.
We follow the Puppy Culture approach to early development, incorporating age-appropriate enrichment, socialization, confidence-building activities, problem-solving opportunities, and the gradual introduction of new experiences. We also incorporate Avidog puppy-rearing principles, with an emphasis on understanding developmental stages, providing appropriate enrichment, and preparing puppies for successful transitions into their new homes, using the APET testing methods to aid in placement.
Our puppy-rearing program includes a couple of elements many puppy buyers are interested to hear more about:
- Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS): During the neonatal period, we introduce brief, carefully controlled neurological stimulation exercises designed to provide mild, age-appropriate challenges during early development.
- Early Scent Introduction (ESI): We introduce puppies to a variety of scents during their earliest weeks, providing opportunities for early olfactory stimulation and engagement.
As the puppies grow, their world grows with them. We introduce new surfaces, sounds, objects, environments, and experiences in a thoughtful and controlled manner. We encourage curiosity, resilience, and problem-solving while always considering each puppy's individual developmental needs.
Our goal is not simply to expose puppies to as many things as possible, but to make those early experiences positive and meaningful.
π‘ Why We Don't Take Deposits on Newborn Puppies:
One of the questions we are frequently asked is whether families can reserve a particular puppy shortly after birth.
The answer is no, and there is a very good reason for this.
At birth, we cannot reliably predict what a puppy's adult structure, temperament, confidence, or drive will be like. While families may naturally be drawn to a particular color, marking, or photograph, these characteristics tell us very little about whether that puppy will be the right companion for their lifestyle.
At approximately 7β8 weeks of age, we undertake individual puppy evaluations, considering:
- Structure: Evaluating physical development, movement, and suitability for potential show, performance, or companion homes.
- Temperament: Assessing confidence, sociability, environmental responses, adaptability, and individual personality.
- Toy and play drive: Observing motivation, engagement, and play behaviors that may indicate suitability for different activities and lifestyles.
- Herding instinct: When we have waterfowl on the ground at the time we also evaluate herding instinct for each puppy in the litter.
We also draw on our observations of each puppy throughout their development. A single evaluation is only one part of understanding who that puppy is becoming.
Our priority is matching the right puppy with the right home, rather than allowing families to select based on appearance alone. Some puppies may thrive in active performance homes, others may show promise for the conformation ring, and others may be particularly well suited to life as much-loved family companions. None of these roles is more important than another. What matters is finding the right fit.
We don't just want our puppies to find homes. We want them to find the right homes.πΎ
