đż NITRATE & PHOSPHATE: ESSENTIAL PLANT NUTRIENTS
In a healthy planted aquarium, nitrate and phosphate are not contaminants to fear. They are essential resources that plants require for normal growth.
NITRATE â NOââť
Nitrate provides nitrogen, which plants use to produce amino acids, proteins, chlorophyll, and nucleic acids.
Nitrate is chemically different from ammonia and ammonium. Its presence alone does not mean an aquarium is âdirty.â In a properly maintained planted aquarium, nitrate is an important source of plant nutrition.
PHOSPHATE â POâÂłâť
Phosphate supplies phosphorus. Inside plant cells, phosphorus forms part of ATPâadenosine triphosphateâa natural molecule cells use to store and transfer energy.
In plain language, ATP helps power the biological processes involved in plant growth. Phosphorus is also needed to build DNA, RNA, and healthy cell membranes and to support normal cellular metabolism.
A COMMON MISCONCEPTION
Nitrate and phosphate do not function as automatic algae switches.
Algae responds to the aquarium as a complete systemâincluding light intensity, COâ stability, circulation, plant health, organic accumulation, and maintenance. Purposefully supplying nitrate and phosphate to healthy plants is very different from allowing waste to accumulate unchecked.
The goal is not uncontrolled nutrient accumulation. The goal is to prevent essential nutrients from becoming limiting.
đ§Ş HOW DOES PPM FIT INTO THIS?
One part per million, or ppm, is approximately one milligram of a substance per liter of aquarium water.
However, ppm added is not necessarily the same as the ppm measured later. After fertilizer enters the aquarium:
⢠Plants absorb nutrients
⢠Substrates may retain or release them
⢠Fish food and source water add nutrients
⢠Biological activity changes their chemical forms
⢠Water changes dilute what remains
A test result is therefore a snapshot of the aquariumâs net nutrient concentrationânot simply a measurement of the fertilizer dose.

Estimative Index, commonly called EI, is based on keeping essential nutrients available at non-limiting levels and using regular water changes as a predictable reset.
