🌿 NITRATE & PHOSPHATE: ESSENTIAL PLANT NUTRIENTS

In a healthy planted aquarium, nitrate and phosphate are not contaminants to fear. They are essential resources that plants require for normal growth.

NITRATE — NO₃⁻

Nitrate provides nitrogen, which plants use to produce amino acids, proteins, chlorophyll, and nucleic acids.

Nitrate is chemically different from ammonia and ammonium. Its presence alone does not mean an aquarium is “dirty.” In a properly maintained planted aquarium, nitrate is an important source of plant nutrition.

PHOSPHATE — PO₄³⁻

Phosphate supplies phosphorus. Inside plant cells, phosphorus forms part of ATP—adenosine triphosphate—a natural molecule cells use to store and transfer energy.

In plain language, ATP helps power the biological processes involved in plant growth. Phosphorus is also needed to build DNA, RNA, and healthy cell membranes and to support normal cellular metabolism.

A COMMON MISCONCEPTION

Nitrate and phosphate do not function as automatic algae switches.

Algae responds to the aquarium as a complete system—including light intensity, CO₂ stability, circulation, plant health, organic accumulation, and maintenance. Purposefully supplying nitrate and phosphate to healthy plants is very different from allowing waste to accumulate unchecked.

The goal is not uncontrolled nutrient accumulation. The goal is to prevent essential nutrients from becoming limiting.

🧪 HOW DOES PPM FIT INTO THIS?

One part per million, or ppm, is approximately one milligram of a substance per liter of aquarium water.

However, ppm added is not necessarily the same as the ppm measured later. After fertilizer enters the aquarium:

• Plants absorb nutrients
• Substrates may retain or release them
• Fish food and source water add nutrients
• Biological activity changes their chemical forms
• Water changes dilute what remains

A test result is therefore a snapshot of the aquarium’s net nutrient concentration—not simply a measurement of the fertilizer dose.

🌱 THE CONNECTION TO ESTIMATIVE INDEX

Estimative Index, commonly called EI, is based on keeping essential nutrients available at non-limiting levels and using regular water changes as a predictable reset.

EI is not one magical nitrate-to-phosphate ratio. It is a nutrient-management philosophy designed to prevent plant growth from being restricted by insufficient fertilization.

🌿 ATTACHING MOSS TO HARDSCAPE: OLD SCHOOL OR NEW SCHOOL?

There are two common ways to attach aquarium moss to driftwood and stone—and although both can work, they offer very different results.

The traditional method uses cotton thread. Spread the moss into a thin, even layer, then gently wrap the thread around the hardscape in several directions. It should be snug enough to hold the moss in place without crushing it.

As the moss grows, its tiny rhizoids begin gripping the surface. By the time the cotton thread naturally weakens and breaks down, the moss should be established and growing on its own. It takes a little more time upfront, but it provides excellent control and leaves a clean, natural-looking result.

The newer and faster method uses cyanoacrylate super glue gel. It can be convenient for securing small pieces of moss in tight spaces, but it’s also very easy to use too much. Once the glue contacts moisture, it cures almost instantly and can leave behind a bright, chalky-white residue—especially noticeable against dark wood or stone. Too much glue can also harden or smother portions of delicate moss.

Our preference at GLA? Cotton thread.

It may be the old-school method, but it allows the moss to lie naturally, gives you time to make adjustments, and doesn’t leave permanent white marks across the hardscape.

If you prefer super glue gel, remember: less is more. Use only tiny dots and attach the base of the moss while leaving the green growing tips exposed.

Sometimes the newest method isn’t necessarily the cleanest method. 🌿

⚠️ YOUR REGULATOR MAY NOT BE THE PROBLEM. THE TUBING MATTERS.

The photograph demonstrates what can happen when soft, low-grade tubing is placed under pressure: it balloons. If you focus your eye at the connection area you’ll notice the tubing is like a long balloon. This is the

Modern ceramic atomizers and ultra-fine diffusers require considerably more pressure than traditional low-pressure CO₂ equipment. Before the diffuser can begin producing mist, the delivery line must pressurize sufficiently to overcome the ceramic’s resistance—often called its cracking pressure.

If the tubing expands during that process, it behaves like a small pressure accumulator:

• CO₂ is temporarily stored as the tubing stretches
• Diffuser startup may be delayed
• Bubble rates can surge or fluctuate as pressure stabilizes
• Expanded tubing may continue feeding CO₂ after the solenoid closes
• Repeated expansion and contraction can make delivery less predictable

This becomes even more important when using a pH controller. Every time the controller cycles the solenoid, the tubing depressurizes and must pressurize again. Soft tubing repeats the same expansion-and-contraction cycle throughout the day, potentially contributing to delayed response, controller hunting and pH overshoot.

“CO₂-resistant” should mean more than chemical compatibility. Quality tubing must also resist expansion, maintain its dimensions under pressure, grip fittings securely and deliver gas consistently.

To be technically clear, not every PVC formulation is unsuitable. Properly engineered, pressure-rated PVC can perform well. Although that version of PVC is rare to see in circulation. The concern is standard soft PVC/vinyl airline, silicone airline and inexpensive tubing that is labeled CO₂-resistant but lacks the wall strength and dimensional stability demanded by modern atomizers.

A precision regulator is only as stable as the components connected to it. High-grade CO₂ delivery tubing isn’t merely an accessory—it is part of the pressure-control system.

Sometimes the most impressive part of a CO₂ system is what never happens. This video sent by a customer today is an excellent example.

The GLA Pro CO₂ Reactor shown here had already been operating for hours when this video was recorded. Look closely at the top of the chamber:

No trapped gas pocket.
No buildup of undissolved CO₂.
No periodic “burping” of wasted gas into the aquarium.

The reactor remains completely filled with water while every injected bubble is captured, circulated, and dissolved. That means rapid CO₂ saturation, a fast and controlled pH drop, and virtually zero waste.

Many reactors can dissolve CO₂. The real challenge is doing it continuously without allowing gas to accumulate and eventually escape. That performance comes from the internal flow path and design—not simply the size of the chamber.

Seiryu stone is easy to fall in love with. Its rugged texture, dramatic veins, and natural character can turn a simple aquascape into a breathtaking mountain landscape—but beautiful hardscape is not always maintenance-free.

Seiryu is a mineral-rich stone that can slowly release carbonates into the water. Depending on the stone and your source water, this may gradually raise GH and KH and influence how stable your pH remains. In softer, acidic, CO₂-enriched aquariums, this effect can become even more noticeable over time.

That doesn’t make Seiryu a poor choice. It simply means the aquascaper needs to stay involved:

🪨 Monitor GH and KH instead of assuming they remain unchanged
💧 Perform consistent water changes
🧪 Watch for gradual shifts in water chemistry
🧽 Clean the stone’s deep crevices when debris and algae begin collecting
🌿 Adjust CO₂ and livestock choices according to the water—not just the appearance of the aquascape

Every hardscape material becomes part of the ecosystem. Some stones remain relatively inert, while others actively influence the water around them. Understanding that difference allows us to enjoy their beauty without being surprised by what happens behind the glass.

Today, we learned with profound sadness of the passing of Christel Kasselmann—one of the most respected and influential figures the planted-aquarium world has ever known.

Christel was far more than an author. She was a botanist, researcher, explorer, educator, and lifelong champion of aquatic plants. Through decades of fieldwork, careful observation, lectures, scientific descriptions, and writing, she helped the world better understand not only how aquarium plants grow, but where they come from and what they truly need to thrive.

For generations of aquarists, her book Aquarium Plants was not simply a book on a shelf. It was a trusted guide, a source of inspiration, and often the beginning of a much deeper appreciation for the living plants inside our aquariums. Her knowledge crossed borders and languages, shaping hobbyists, growers, researchers, and aquascapers around the world.

Her work gave our hobby more than information—it taught us to look closer, ask better questions, and respect the natural habitats behind every species we cultivate.

On behalf of everyone at Green Leaf Aquariums, we extend our deepest condolences to Christel’s family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Her passing is an immeasurable loss, but her legacy will remain alive in the books we continue to open, the knowledge we pass forward, and the aquatic plants growing in our care.
