Antivenom Mega-Post: What It Is and How It Works copied over from National Snakebite Support
Every day, you see us emphasize the importance of antivenom. We often describe antivenom as the only treatment capable of neutralizing venom toxins, but we donโt always take the time to explain exactly what that means, or how antivenom is made in the first place.
Fortunately, one of our NSS admins, Ray Morgan, happens to be a documentary filmmaker and science communicator (more on that shortly!). As youโve seen here at NSS, many medical professionals receive little to no training in snakebite management. As a result, patients often donโt get appropriate treatment when they need it most. Our mission is to change that. We want to help ensure that, in the future, if you or someone you love is bitten by a venomous snake, you can have confidence that the hospital providing your care is up-to-date on the latest evidence-based treatment practices.
