Yellow sided or pineapple? Both are beautiful green cheek mutations, but here at Rock The Flock, we lean toward yellow sided.

Yellow sided, also called opaline, keeps the darker head and rich green wings, with yellow along the sides and red across the belly. I love that contrast. The darker feathers make those bright colors stand out so beautifully.

Pineapple combines yellow sided with cinnamon, giving the bird a lighter head and softer overall coloring. Beautiful too, just a different look.

For me, there is something about the rich colors of a yellow sided that keeps me staring. Especially when they have that beautiful red coming up through the chest.

It’s a color preference. Each bird has its own personality, and those beautiful feathers are only part of what makes us fall in love.

A special little arrival! 🐣 Our RTF Operations Manager has welcomed the first baby from her own pet hen, paired with one of our handsome RTF boy

Her hen had been hormonal for an extended period, and despite trying other approaches, the behavior persisted. With RTF’s guidance and support, she decided to move forward with breeding.

Breeding can be a rewarding experience when approached thoughtfully, with thorough research, ethical decisions, experienced mentorship, access to an avian vet, and someone ready to step in and help. The birds’ wellbeing comes first, every step of the way.

We’re so happy to share this special milestone with her!

When I say kakarikis are active, I mean VERY active. These little birds have places to go, things to inspect, and apparently a very busy schedule. Watching them is entertainment all on its own.

They can come over to see you, climb on you, check what you’re doing, and then be off to their next adventure. Many would rather have you involved in their activities than sit still for cuddles.

That energy is a big part of their charm, but it also means they need plenty of space, safe flying time, and things to do every day. Exploring, climbing, and searching for food are all part of being a kakariki.

If you enjoy a busy little companion, they can be such a joy. Just be prepared. You may be ready to sit down, but your kakariki still has plans.

Sun Conures are absolutely wonderful little parrots: affectionate, playful, smart, colorful, and full of personality.

But let’s be honest… they are LOUD. Not “a little chirp” loud. They have a big voice in a small body and they truly believe everyone in the house should hear their important announcements. 😂

They are amazing for the right home, especially someone who loves an interactive, busy bird and understands that their excitement comes with volume.
