How often should you trim your dog's nails?
Every dog is an individual, and as such, have their own unique needs. However, a good rule of thumb is every 4-6 weeks for most.
You can tell if your dog's nails are too long by placing them on a hard, level surface, and looking to see if their nails touch the surface when they are standing still; ideally they should not.
Why are long nails bad for your dog?
When your dog's nails are overgrown, they are forced to change their posture and gait, i.e. they way they stand and move. Over time, this can lead to damage to joints, ligaments, and tendons; and can also lead to injuries, chronic inflammation, and arthritis. Not to mention it is very painful!
Having to adjust the way they stand and move will affect how your dog perceives their environment. Their foot pads have sensory receptors that help them understand where they are in relation to the ground; and when they are forced to change their gait, their brain isn't able to interpret the signals in the way that they are used to.
Overgrown nails can make it very difficult for a dog to walk on hard, slick surfaces, and can easily lead to injury when they are playing or running.
All of these things can affect any dog, but are especially harmful for older, and larger breed dogs as they can be more easily injured.
In addition to injury, dog's can develop fears of certain surfaces if they feel unsafe walking on them. Which can manifest in many different ways and in different areas of their life.
