📣COMMUNITY UPDATE📣

Greetings FCZ Community,

With our immigrant community top of mind, and after consulting with our community partners, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our Día de los Mu***os event this year. Please understand that this decision reflects our desire to stand in solidarity with the community and ensure their safety.

We will still honor the holiday with special decorations, an art display from Arte Américas, and two ofrendas where we invite community members to visit and bring photos of their loved ones or beloved pets to be honored from October 27 through November 2, if they feel safe doing so. The Zoo will also be donating to Faith in the Valley, who work to advance an accessible path to legal status and citizenship to all undocumented immigrants, and we encourage others to support their work if they feel moved to do so.

We remain committed to ensuring the Zoo is a safe and welcoming place for all families, and we believe this decision reflects that commitment to our community.

We're going beneath the stripes for today's . Here we can see a good look at the skull and teeth of a tiger. Tigers have the largest canine teeth of all living big cats. They can sometimes grow up to 3.5 inches which is roughly the size of a human finger 😨

We are so excited to announce that our female orangutan, Negara, gave birth to a healthy baby girl on October 5th. They are both doing well bonding behind-the-scenes. This little bundle of orange joy needs a name and that's where YOU can help us. Will her name be Marigold, Ru, or Lyra? Visit the Zoo to vote for your favorite! The last day to vote will be Sunday, November 1st. Stay tuned for updates!

what's in the casket!? oops, we mean casque! As you can see from this x-ray of our rhinoceros hornbill, their famous horn or 'casque' is hollow. Scientists believe it acts as a resonance chamber that amplifies the sound of their honking call.

Next up for we're diving under with our giant gouramis. Thanks to their special organ called a 'labyrinth organ', they can breathe air from the surface. This allows them to survive in muddy waters with low oxygen.
