Most people think puppy socialization means letting puppies play with as many dogs as possible.

In reality, proper socialization is about helping puppies learn how to confidently navigate the world around them. It’s exposing them to new sights, sounds, surfaces, people, dogs, and environments while teaching them how to remain calm and engaged.

Good socialization helps puppies develop:
✔ Confidence in new situations
✔ Appropriate interactions with other dogs
✔ Better focus around distractions
✔ Stronger coping skills when faced with something unfamiliar

That’s why we created our Summer Puppy Camp—a structured 4-week program focused on socialization, confidence building, and real-world exposure in a safe, controlled environment.

Field Trip & Pack Walk Day! 🐾

Our Day Trainers joined client Talulah for a pack walk and got to practice their skills in real-world environments. From the organized chaos of Costco’s entrance and exit to the hustle and bustle of Home Depot, the dogs worked through lots of everyday distractions, sights, sounds, and people.

Training in different environments helps dogs learn how to handle unpredictability with a calmer mindset — whether that’s loud noises, busy crowds, shopping carts, or strangers stopping to say hello. Real-world exposure like this helps build confidence, neutrality, and better decision-making outside of the home.

We love when real-life training opportunities present themselves!

While working on water exposure with our Day Training dogs — Daisy, Birdie, Ruby, and Kashi — a delivery truck pulled up to unload items right next to us. Instead of avoiding the distraction, we turned it into a valuable training and socialization opportunity.

The dogs were able to experience:
• A large moving truck
• Loud and unexpected noises
• New sights, sounds, and activity
• Learning to stay calm and engaged around distractions

These kinds of real-world experiences are especially important for dogs who are sound sensitive or easily overstimulated. Building confidence in new environments helps create calmer, more adaptable dogs both at home and in public.

Day Training spots are currently available! If you’re looking for help with socialization, confidence building, manners, or real-world exposure training, now is a great time to get started.

Look at the self-control!

Rosalie is currently with us for her 4-Day Mini Board & Train. While she’s here, we’ve been giving her a refresher on all of her commands while also working on her leash manners and impulse control around cats. Since Rosalie tends to pull on walks and wants to chase cats, this was the perfect opportunity to work on those behaviors in a structured environment.

Our Mini Board & Train programs are exclusive to dogs who have previously completed one of Ryker’s training programs, making them a great option for refreshers, tune-ups, and continued progress. Email us at [email protected] for more info.

Gunner is finishing up the final days of his 2 Week Behavioral Board & Train program!

Over the past 2 weeks, we’ve been working heavily on the “Out” command — an important safety protocol that helps his owners safely manage his resource guarding around his housemate.

Behavior modification isn’t just about teaching commands; it’s about creating structure, clear communication, and safer interactions within the home. Gunner has been making great progress, and we’re excited to help his owners continue that progress once he goes home.

Our Behavioral Board & Train program is designed for dogs struggling with more serious behavioral challenges such as reactivity, aggression, separation anxiety, and resource guarding. During the program, dogs receive structured training, real-world exposure, and clear communication to help change their mindset and improve everyday life at home.

Field Trip Day! 🌿🐾

Board & Train dog Gunner took a trip to the Clovis Botanical Garden to continue working on his training in a real-world environment.

Field trips like this are a huge part of our Board & Train programs because they help dogs learn how to stay calm, focused, and responsive around real-life distractions. Gunner got to experience new sights, smells, sounds, people, and environments while practicing his obedience and building confidence.

Training in new places helps “proof” commands and teaches dogs how to generalize their skills outside of the home and training facility. 🌎🐕

Bonus: Clovis Botanical Gardens and is located at Dry Creek Park. The garden is free to visit and dog-friendly (just remember to pick up after your pup).
