Bogart — Day 12

Listening in public means working through whatever is more interesting.

Bogart practiced heel while walking through a public area with a couple of dogs nearby. We then used one of his favorite distractions—a ball—to challenge his recall and ask him to leave the fun long enough to come back when called.

These are the moments that help turn training into something useful beyond the backyard.

Tilly — Day 13

Commands become useful when a dog can follow them outside the training yard.

During Tilly’s trip to Caras Park, she worked on heel along the walking paths and stayed with Bri while passing people and another dog. She then practiced recall beside the river before finishing with sit, down, and more focused movement in the grass.

This outing gave Tilly a chance to put several skills together while surrounded by real-world distractions.

Bogart — Playtime

Training isn’t the only thing happening around here!

With a pile of leaves, a few tennis balls, and Araya and Selena helping hide them, Bogart turned the afternoon into one big treasure hunt. He dove right in, dug through the leaves, and kept coming back for another round.

Tilly — Day 11

Recall is one skill. Staying settled while another dog moves and trains nearby takes a different kind of focus.

Tilly began with recall practice across the yard before moving to Place. She stayed on her spot while another dog walked, practiced commands, and came closer—learning that she can calmly watch without needing to join in.

Bogart — Day 10

Coming when called gets harder when another dog is nearby.

Bogart practiced recall across the yard while another dog rested calmly on Place. This gave him a chance to move, explore, and still turn away from the distraction when called.

Tilly — Day 10

Tilly practiced coming when called while surrounded by plenty of interesting smells and room to explore. We gave her time to sniff before asking her to leave the distraction and return.

These repetitions help teach her that she can enjoy exploring while still listening when it matters.

Tilly — Day 9

Training needs to carry over no matter who is holding the leash. Araya and Selena took turns working with Tilly on heel, sit, and recall through the neighborhood.

She also practiced staying focused with the skateboard moving nearby and did a nice job following their guidance throughout the session.

Bogart — Day 8

Bogart practiced recall in the yard before taking his heel and sit into the neighborhood. Araya and Selena helped add a little extra challenge—one worked with him while the other moved nearby on a skateboard.

Working with different handlers and movement around him helps Bogart learn that the same expectations still apply, even when the situation changes.

Tilly — Day 8

Tilly took her training to the park, where she practiced heel, sit, recall, and even used a large rock for place. She did a great job staying focused while working in a new environment with people and activity around her!
