What does it take to earn a +1 on your Showmanship setup? 👀

A square, balanced horse is a great start. But when you’re competing at a level like the All American Quarter Horse Congress, it’s the finer details that can separate a good setup from an exceptional one.

As a judge, I’m not just looking at where your horse’s feet end up. I’m watching how you get them there. Your timing, your hand, your communication, and your ability to make those tiny adjustments all matter.

Because sometimes, that extra inch makes all the difference.

🎥 Here’s a little insight into what we’re looking for from the judge’s perspective.

And just like that… we’re Congress bound! 🏆✨

The horses are loaded, the excitement is building, and we’re ready for another incredible All American Quarter Horse Congress!

Kicking things off for Team Briere is Brigid Johnson and ONA Impulsive Cowboy! These two are no strangers to the winner’s circle, and we couldn’t be more excited to watch them step into the pen together again this year.

There’s something special about watching our youngest exhibitors chase their dreams on one of the biggest stages in the industry. 💙

Wishing Brigid and Cowboy the very best of luck as they get our Congress started! Here’s to great rides, unforgettable memories, and an amazing Congress for the entire team!

You might be leaving some of the easiest points on the table.

In showmanship, you either walk or you don’t. You’re either standing or you’re walking. There shouldn’t be a slow build into the walk or a warning that you’re about to stop.

The same idea carries into the trot — your horse needs to leave with you, get to pace quickly and be ready when you are.

These transitions may not have the highest degree of difficulty, but that’s exactly why they need to be GOOD. They’re an opportunity to get the judge excited about your pattern before you ever get to the harder maneuvers.

As we head into the All American Quarter Horse Congress, we’re breaking down the little details that can help move those scores into the higher pluses.

Stay tuned — there’s more coming in this series.

At the Congress, good isn’t always enough to get you into that +2 range.

So what separates a good showmanship maneuver from an exceptional one?

It’s not just completing the maneuver correctly. It’s the synchronization, efficiency, timing and presentation that can take a score from a +1 or +1½ to a +2 and beyond.

In Part 1, we’re starting with something as simple as the walk — and what I’m looking for from the judge’s chair when I start moving a maneuver into that +2 range.

There’s more to come. We’ll be breaking down a few more pieces of the showmanship pattern as we head into the All American Quarter Horse Congress, so stay tuned for the next part.
