Fresh off the Presses in Montana- Every parent’s worst nightmare out here is a conflict between local predators and our kids. This happened earlier this week about 5 miles from us. The family involved in this story raises beef and poultry, along with a kennel of hunting hounds. They are great neighbors and I have even worked with the mother. We are so glad that Colton is safe, even though it is very sad for a subadult grizzly to be lost.
There are certainly lessons to be learned from this story, like securing attractants and utilizing tools like electric/hot fence to deter bears from our coops and grain stores- but this story and the others like it highlight exactly why we raise
The sense of peace our family and livestock enjoy on a daily basis is thanks to these dogs! LGDs are not just a stock-safe dog. They are specific breeds that have been selected for thousands of years to live with and protect shepherds and their herds.
Every year, we have neighbors who lose stock to mountain lions, bears and wolves. We don’t. The dogs make the difference. They are effective deterrents for any predator (wild or otherwise).
