We’ve had the pleasure of welcoming several new pups to the facility recently, and we wanted to take this opportunity to explain our onboarding process and why we intentionally operate differently than many traditional boarding facilities.
Unlike large kennels with rotating staff, Homeward Hound Retreat operates on a much smaller, more personal scale. Every dog in our care is cared for by me personally.
Because of this, it’s important that we have adequate time to process new clients, complete overnight assessments, and thoughtfully integrate dogs into our environment. This helps ensure the safety, comfort, and well-being of both new arrivals and the dogs already in our care.
Dogs thrive on routine, structure, and stability. When those routines change too quickly, stress levels can rise. If one dog is struggling, the entire group can feel it. Rest becomes more difficult, tension increases, and the likelihood of accidents or behavioral issues grows.
Our overnight assessments allow us to learn how each dog adjusts to our environment, routine, rest periods, and social dynamics before longer stays. Taking the time to do this properly creates a calmer, safer experience for everyone.
As a solo operator, I also have to ensure I can safely manage every dog in my care. While I have a wonderful husband, and a couple trusted family and friends who can assist in emergencies, they are not full-time staff and may not be immediately available.
Everything we do is intentional and designed to maintain a safe, structured, low-stress environment where dogs can truly settle in and feel comfortable. Our process may look different, but it’s one of the biggest reasons we’re able to provide the level of care and attention that we do.
Thank you to everyone who respects our policies, planning process, and the time it takes to properly prepare for each dog’s stay. It truly makes a difference for the entire pack.
